Windows 10: C Drive: Unknown LARGE File - stumped

WINDOWS 10 HOME - 20H2 - DESKTOP


I have a LARGE 3.64 GB file on my C drive and am totally at a loss. Disclaimer: I know just enough about computers to be dangerous.

Not savvy to say the least. So, simple answers, if any, would be best for THIS user.


When accessing my "c" drive this file shows up. You can see it was created January 9, 2021.


I did update from Version 1909 to 20H2 on February 14, 2021, so this file was generated before that date.

When I click on the file, I get a popup asking me "How do you want to open this file? Look for an app in the MS store."

I did not even go there!

I TRY to web search answers to my own questions whenever possible, but this one is a doozy and has me stumped. I don't even known what to search for!

As you can see, the numbers of the file goes on for days. May as well be written in a foreign language -- too many numbers, letters to do a web search for it!

I'm curious if I can just erase it from the C drive since it does not seem to be doing anything that I know of. IF anyone has insight as to what this

may be, I sure would appreciate knowing. Thanks to all the experts helping us!

Then I would try making a backup and then immediately restore from the backup, using the bootable Macrium media to do the restoration.

If the C: drive was the larger of the two, then it looks like Macrium will erase that "unknown" file. Ofc, it may come back, over time, depending on where it came from to begin with.



/e I'd test it for you, but I don't have a mysterious "unknown" file. *cry

I see a file with an unknown name occupying about 21 percent of the drive.

Not much help without a name.

It appears to be in the root of C.

Looks like a file, not a directory?

Try another app like Tree Size Free.
