Windows 10: C:\Windows\System32>takeown/F K: ERROR: Access is denied.

I was trying to use Backer to back up my user files from a HDD G: to a USB memory stick, K:. I do this fairly regularly without problems. In the meantime, I have changed computer and OS from Win10 to Win11, and reassigned the various HDDs.However, I got a message that one folder on G: being backed up had Error 5, unable to open etc a file\folder etc.I then tried to allow access, or ownership or anything initially to the folder on G:, then to the K: drive.Now I am not able to access K: at all, as seen in the title.What have I done wrong?More importantly, how can I get control of this drive a

I redid the CMD prompt and right clicked to get administrator privilege. that worked.

I them thought of entering item 2 one by one, but that didnt' work.

i then copied the command exactly and entered that on the CMD prompt, and got an error.

Below is what I got.

Permissions: External HDD Access Denied

I have also tried

takeown /F F:

takeown /F F

takeown /F f:

But all give me a "Error: Access is denied" message.

Welcome to TenForums! That sounds odd. Not sure why files would be getting locked on you like that, hopefully not some sort of ransomware / virus. I work a lot with windows images and with the tasks that I perform, it's really easy to lose access to files if an imaging operation is halted midstream. After a lot of trial and error I've found that these commands run from an elevated command prompt seem to work very well at restoring access: C:\windows\system32\takeown /f "C:\Project\*.*" /r /d y icacls "C:\Project\*.*" /T /grant %username%:F Notes: In my example, the files I need to regain access to are in the C:\Project folder. Change this to whatever location you need. In the second command %username% is a parameter that signifies the current user name. I suggest simply leaving that as %username%.
