Windows 10: Caitlin I upgrade Windows 10 non genuine version to legitimate just by

I'm right now on Windows 10 Pro non genuine version. I'm planning to buy the legitimate version from Microsoft and change the product key in my existing Windows 10 installation. Will that work? Or do I need to install the OS as a whole ? That would make me install all the apps and data once again and that's why I'm looking at this option.

Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to go genuine after already upgrading to a non genuine version of Win10? Like if I have a non genuine windows 8 and then upgrade, windows 10 will then also be non genuine but can I then buy a licence and go genuine?

You won't qualify for the Windows Vista unit to receive a free copy.

Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as free upgrade for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 devices.

If you don’t have a legitimate copy of Windows on a system, it won’t be eligible for free conversion to “Genuine” (i.e., licensed) status.

Basically, a computer running a legitimate version of Windows 7 or 8.1 will be upgraded to Windows 10 and then activate the new copy of the operating system automatically, with no other issue expected to be experienced if everything goes right.

On the other hand, those running a pirated version of the two operating systems will also get the upgrade to Windows 10, but afterward, they'll end up with an unlicensed copy of the OS that will run for a limited period of time. This copy won't be activated
and will require users to purchase a legitimate license.

No you just have to feed the current install a key
MS doesn't issue keys though
So just go to the store through 10's activation section
You'll have to make or be using a MS account to purchase the 10 pro.

 

I think your best bet would be to change the product key to the generic Windows 10 Pro product key:
VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Then, when your Windows 10 Pro is no longer activated, go to the Microsoft store to purchase a legitimate activation for it.

Or you could do what I did.

Bought a Microsoft DVD which came with a matching COA key from my local computer store.
Windows 10 Pro is about $145.00.

I would not trust a counterfeit installation. I would do a Clean Install.
