Windows 10: Camera and Microphone do not work after latest Microsoft Update

I am running Windows 10 on a Dell desktop computer. It has worked fine for years.


After the last Microsoft Update on 9/10/20, I could not use either my microphone or camera on Skype. Within a few minutes of trying to make a video call the computer will lock up and my only option is to remove power and then restart. If I am not in Skype, the lockup does not happen. I have now found that the camera and microphone do not work on other apps as well.


I have removed Skype and Edge and reloaded them. No change. I went to the Skype discussion forum and there were at least 10 other computers with the same problem.


It appears that this was caused by the update. Any fixes? Help is appreciated.

Camera and Microphone Privacy

This issue occurs due to permission issue, driver issue, license for an app is out of sync with the license installed on the computer or if the app is not updated. To give permission to Camera and Microphone app, you may follow
these steps:

• Go to Settings.
• Select Privacy.
• Look for Camera, make sure that “Let apps use my camera” is turned On. You may choose the apps that can use your camera as well.
• Go back to Privacy and select Microphone, make sure that “Let apps use my microphone” is turned On. You may choose the apps that can use your microphone as well.

USB Camera + Microphone not working after Windows 10 Update

Yesterday I got an update from Windows 10. I waited 1-2 hours for it to finish but after the update I have problems with my USB Camera and Microphone. The devices are connected and I can see them listed as USB 2.0 MIC but they are not working. I tried the hardware on a laptop with Windows 7 and it works. I tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting and installing the drivers again, but it didn't help.

When I click on the microphone settings and I check the box "listen to this device", I can hear my voice through the speakers. It seems the problem is the software changes after the update.

After the update Windows 10 asked me questions about data collection and speech recognition. I clicked the 2nd response (which is negative - not to use any speech recognition and data collection). Could this have broken the USB Camera + Microphone?

Any idea how to fix this stupid Windows 10 problem?
