Windows 10: Can access administrative shared folders on one computer, but not the other way around

I operate a desktop and latop (both Windows 10) at home; from the laptop (Surface Pro 4) I can access the shared administrative drives of the desktop (i.e. C$, E$, F$, etc); however the opposite traffic desktop to laptop is met with unrelenting credential challenge.

Both computers run as my Microsoft account as main administrator (i.e. *** Email address is removed for privacy ***). Somehow the authentication as this account from desktop to laptop is not succeeding; cannot tell where the problem is in authentication process.


When I peeked back at the laptop's Credential Manager, I saw the (cached) account to RDC to desktop is "MicrosoftAccount\*** Email address is removed for privacy ***", so I attempted that more explicit user name format when accessing the laptop's administrative shared drives, but the credential challenge still remain a stubborn roadblock.

What circumstances of system configuration can be inducing this one-way-only authentication?

Accessing administrative shares


I have a networked Windows 10 Pro computer A with built-in 'Administrator' account disabled. However, it has a "normal" administrator account named 'Admin'.

I would like to access administrative share '\\A\C$' from another computer B in the network. Windows asks me for access credentials. I enter 'Admin' and the corresponding password. This results in "access denied" error.

Hence the question: What's preventing the access?

My guesses are

1. (Unlikely: ) Administrative shares are accessible to the built-in 'Administrator' only.
2. (More likely: ) Administrative shares are accessible to a designated set of users and there's a way to control it. My homemade 'Admin' is not on the list.
3. (Most likely: ) Network access to administrative shares is completely disabled by default in Windows 10, but can be enabled somehow.
4. Something else?

Cannot access shared network drive


Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.
