Can Anyone check this Win10 Recovery Drive?

Hi. Last October I made a recovery drive on USB but used the USB to save other files onto. I now need the Recovery Drive (see previous post at Critical Service Failed - Automatic Repair and Advanced Options).

I have moved the other files off of the USB, but am unsure if what remains, is all that is required to re-start Windows 10 on my Acer Aspire laptop.

I have taken "snips" of the main directories and files (see attached Word doc). Can anyone verify that the Recovery drive has all that is required?

There is an empty folder, named "sources" which may not be part of the Recovery drive.

    :)

  2. What if my Win10 crashes on 28 July and I only have a Win8.1 recovery disk?

My laptop comes with a copy of 8.1 and the promise to be able to update to win10 if I choose to. And I've upgraded to Win10. I realized I might run into a problem if I ever need to reset my computer to factory defaults after 29 July. I only have an 8.1 recovery
    disk.

Anyone knows if one can still upgrade the same machine back to Win10 after a 8.1 recovery?

RECOVERY & Loss of Mahjong Calendar data

When using Win10 RECOVERY application the Mahjong Calendar gets erased for the days back to the RECOVERY point. MS Support had no answer other than going back and redoing those days.

Does anyone know the Mahjong Calendar file name so the file can be saved on a daily backup?

The sources folder contains almost everything needed to restore Windows 10 - so you are missing about 90% of the recovery drive now. The sources folder should have 4.97 GB of files in it.

Ah, thank you. I'll try another avenue. I wonder if you could advise whether I should re-install a new copy of Windows 10, with reference to the linked post I supplied?
Am presently backing up most important files through cmd commands, since Windows 10 will not boot.

    See my reply here:
Need assit in backing up user profile without win access

Also, in the opening post of Kyhi's Recovery thread linked there, in the middle of the post is a quote from me about how to turn a standard Windows 10 USB installation flash driver into one that boots into Kyhi's recovery tools that you can also install Windows 10 from. In my opinion, anyone who might ever re-install Windows 10 should have a combination flash drive like that.

Thanks again, but may be a few clicks out of my league, though It's getting a bit clearer, the more I read over it. Will persist for a few hours more.

I have found a Windows 10 repair disc (on DVD drive) that I made last June, with 344 MB in the sources folder. Gonna try your way first. Just formatting USB key (FAT32)....

    Hi.

I have a Win 10 ISO burned onto a USB (4.3 GB) but am not sure how to use with the Rescue disc mentioned here: Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk

Do I need to burn the Rescue ISO to a second USB/(or CD) as well?

Then replace the boot.wim file on the Win 10 ISO USB with the boot.wim file on the Rescue ISO USB?
Then boot my laptop from the Win 10 ISO USB?

    What happens then?

Apologies for being a little dim on the subject....

What size is the USB flash drive? It needs to be at least 8 GB.

What is currently on the USB flash drive? Is it a set of files and folders or just the ISO file by itself? It needs to be a set of files and folders.

On the Windows 10 USB flash drive, go to the \sources folder. There will be a file named boot.wim. Rename that file to boot.bak.

In Windows (File Explorer) right click on Kyhi's Recovery Tools iso file and select mount. If you are using Windows 7, you will have to install a program that mounts ISO files. A new drive letter with files and folders should open.

Go to the \sources folder of the new drive letter that opens, and select the boot.wim file. Copy it to the \sources folder on the Windows 10 USB flash drive.

Now when you boot your computer from the USB flash drive it will boot into Kyhi's Recovery Tools. If you want to reinstall Windows from the flash drive you can open File Explorer in Kyhi's Recovery Tools, and run setup.exe from the same USB flash drive.

To answer more fully: the 16 GB USB key was re-formatted, so all files etc were wiped from the USB before burning the ISO files and folders (including Sources folder) onto it.

    Thanks again.
I will certainly return to this thread if (probably when) needed.

See my previous post for Solved status.
