Windows 10: Can anyone help me with my USB hard drive corruption?

Hey y’all so i’m experiencing this new issue on my pc. it’s my external hard drive causing major issues ever since i installed an update for my driver. of course it sounds stupid but i couldn’t save game data on my c drive because i don’t know how to expand it. anyway the problem is when i plug the usb drive in it causes my whole screen to freeze up, can’t do anything about it. i can access my run task bar by ctrl+shift+esc but when i open up my cmd prompt and type in chkdsk it doesn’t load what so ever. when i unplug my usb hard drive it works perfectly . could anyone help me? i would love th

To assist you better, I like to know; have you tried formation the USB hard drive by
right clicking on the hard drive and select Format?

If you are unable to format the USB through above mentioned steps, then I suggest you to try formation the hard drive using diskpart command and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps.

1) Press Windows key + r, type cmd and hit
Enter.

2) Type diskpart, hit Enter.

3) Type List volume. (List of available drives will get listed).

4) Select Volume (#), #- number of the volume, which assigned to hard drive.

5) Type Format recommended. (It will start formatting your hard drive)

• How are you connecting the Hard drive to your computer?
• Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a different computer and check if it works?

It's possible that your USB drivers are corrupt. I suggest you to try the following steps and check.

• Press Windows Key +R and type
  devmgmt.msc to open Device manager.
• Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
  at the left bottom.
• Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click on
  Uninstall to remove it.
• Repeat these steps for the entire USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
• Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.

External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
