I heard windows discontinued their own backup utilities, and I'm wondering if I should use the built in system images or another backup utility.

I'm on the windows insider dev builds, so backups are important AF in this situation.

I've heard macrium reflect (I think I butchered the name) is good, but I'm not entirely sure yet.

    Backup utility

Cobian backup will do file backups locally or to ftp, with or without encryption and compression. However it doesn't do image backups, which is really what you need if want to fully restore your system.

I've used the W7 back up program and Acronis a few times to restore a system and both work great. With Acronis though, you need to burn the recovery cd they suggest FOR EACH and EVERY machine you use it on.

One problem with W7 backup is that seems to break easily. On one machine I did an upgrade re-install and the backup utility doesn't work. No luck in trouble shooting it either. So I now rely on Acronis exclusively for image backups. But I use Cobian for file backups to ftp.

System Image Backup on Windows 10

    Hi John,

I apologize for the delay in response.

From the description provided, I understand that the Windows scheduled Backup is not working properly.

To be able to assist you better, provide us a few more details on the below questions.

    • Does the same issue occur if you try to save the backup on to an external storage device (USB/HDD) ?
    • Are you connected to a Domain Network?
    • Did you check if the issue if the location you chose to save back up in network is available during the time the back up is scheduled to work?

As an initial recommendation, I suggest you to follow the below steps to check the status of
Volume Shadow Copy service and SPP services.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

    • Press the windows key + R to open the Run Command Utility. Type in
services.msc and press Enter to open the Windows Services console.
    • If the SPP service is disabled, double-click it to open the service properties.
    • If Volume Shadow Copy service is disabled, double-click it to open the service properties
    • Click the Startup type list, click
Automatic (Delayed Start), and then click Apply.
    • Under Service status, click Start.

Write to us with the updated information and we would be happy to help you.

    system image backup

    Here's the
    free version of Macrium Reflect
. In addition, retail hard drives typically come with image backup software as well as full instructions on how to use it.

Windows' own System Image Backup utility will make a backup image, but you'll have to use a recovery disk or restore Windows first before you can restore the image. And FWIW, System Image Backup is being deprecated (tech talk for 'on the way out'). You would
be better served by using a third-party image backup utility, as others have suggested, whether that is the software that comes with your new hard drive, the free version of Macrium Reflect, or whatever other image backup program you choose.

Third-party software will make a bootable image of your C: drive, so all you have to do is restore that image to the new hard drive and you're back to work like nothing happened.
