Can I Back Out Upgrade 1709

I have been having too many surprises on my system since the 1709 upgrade - including File History being broken. Can I get rid of it forever in I simply restore my computer to a date prior to when 1709 was installed?

Running Windows 10 Home 64 bit

    :)

  2. iexplore.exe 0xc0000142 error after windows 10 1709 update

Yes even the repair upgrade. Everything worked until the 1709 upgrade applied. Now only IE 11 will not start and it throws the 142 error. We're seeing this on every computer that upgraded to 1709. We're going to revert back to 1703 until Microsoft figures
out there's a bug and fixes this.

Win 10 Version 1709: External syskey.

How important is it to upgrade to the 1709 Version? Can I skip it and still upgrade to the next Version when it comes out without fixing the Syskey problem. I was hacked 11/26/17 and had to pay ransomware to get into my computer. They gave me a key to
get back in but stupidly I didn't save it. I think that would have allowed me to switch ot an Internal Syskey had I known it. Now I'm kind of sunk in terms of Version 1709 upgrade.

How long has it been since you updated?

Obviously if you had a backup from before then you could use that but presumably you don't.

C:\Windows.old is automatically deleted after about a month and it is the directory that is used to roll back to older versions. That means if it is gone and you don't have a backup you are stuck.

You'll be better off trying to fix things than restoring old versions though as old versions stop getting support pretty quick (18 months after release I think).

If you reregister your File History drive it should fix that part of your problem though - lots of people got caught with that (including me).

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. What I want to do is restore my PC using a Restore Point that was set before December when 1709 was installed. Will that remove 1709 (and all subsequent) upgrade, and will they never again be installed?

Unfortunately that's not possible. All restore points from before 1709 were deleted by the upgrade. This is because they would restore files from the earlier version of windows, so you'd end up with a mix of versions that probably would crash and burn (if it ran at all).

You say 1709 but there's 2 different editions of Version 1709, the RTM Version 1709 Build 16299.214 and the IP/Test Version 1709 Build 17093. Both may have newer builds but it is critical to know which the user has installed. Press the Windows Key along with R and type winver and press Enter, post the line showing the mentioned numbers.

From now on make frequent disk images with Macrium Reflect, but there`s no way to stop W10 from eventually updating to the new version, the best you can do is postpone it for 1 year if you have the Pro version.

With the Home version I don`t think there`s any way to stop it from updating.

You're right, (IMO) W10 Home is junk (I regret replacing W7 Home Premium).

However, there's one way to stop Windows Update in W10 (all versions).
Disconnect the network and use a different OS (W7, W8.1, Linux Distro or Mac) when you need the Internet. *Wink

    This also has additional benefits:
    • Stopping W10 Telemetry
    • Greatly increasing the security of your W10 PC

Hey, I never said Windows 10 Home is junk, don`t put words in my mouth. I don`t know anything about the Home version, I only install Pro. *Smile

And be more careful how you talk about Windows 10 around here, you may get yelled at for expressing your opinion.
