    Can I fix "Data error cyclic redundancy check" caused by assigning a Drive letter


    I have data stored on an external hard drive. I recently assigned a fixed drive letter to the drive so I could reliably back it up onto cloud backup.

    Now, when I try to access the hard drive, I can access some of the data, but I can't access much of it. I get the error message:

    Location is not available

    M:\Photos is not accessible.

    Data error cyclic redundancy check.


    From a bit of research, I'm guessing that this is because there is a registry error relating to when I've tried to change the drive letter.

    Is this likely to be the cause? Can I do anything to fix it, such as manually editing the data register? Or do you have any other suggestions as to how I can fix this without loosing the data?

    pls help: CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK ERROR

    Use something like CrystalDiskInfo to check SMART on the drive, however if this is an older IDE drive, SMART might not be supported. Cyclic redundancy errors are almost always uncorrectable disk errors. I suspect that the drive is failing juding from the symptoms you described.
