Windows 10 boot hangs on “Preparing Automatic Repair.” WinPE DVD command prompt fix results in “Path not found: “C:\boot” and “bootrec /fixboot” Access is Denied

    Dear community,

We have a Windows 10 1709 machine (Dell Optiplex 5050) in our office that starts up and goes directly to Windows Automatic Repair. Upon closer inspection, I discovered two "Windows Boot Manager" entries at startup, neither of which load into Win10
1709 installed on the 256GB SSD.

Selecting the first Windows Boot Manager entry goes straight to
    "Preparing Automatic Repair,"
followed by "Diagnosing your PC," but hangs here and never completes diagnosis.

Selecting the second Windows Boot Manager entry makes the Dell BIOS logo appear briefly, and then regresses to a black screen.

The first solution I tried was to rebuild the existing boot configuration data (BCD) store using Windows Recovery Environment straight from a
    Windows 10 1709 DVD:

    1. Bootrec /rebuildbcd
    “Result: Successfully scanned Windows installations”

    Total identified Windows installations: 0

    The operation completed successfully.

The second step I tried was to remove any existing BCD stores manually, and then rebuild them again.

    1. Bcdedit /export C:\bcdbackup

Next, I ran the “attrib” command to gain access to manipulate the BCD.

    1. Attrib C:\boot\bcd –h –r –s

But ran into the following problem: “Path not found – C:\boot”

    Next, I renamed the file

    1. “ren C:\boot\bcd bcd.old”

But also ran into the following problem: “The system cannot find the file specified.”

I then ran a series of bootrec commands in the following sequential order:

    1. Bootrec /fixmbr
    Result: The operation completed successfully

    1. Bootrec /fixboot
    Result: Access is denied

    1. Bootrec /scanos
    Result:

    "Successfully scanned Windows installations"

    Total identified Windows installations: 0

    The operation completed successfully

    1. Bootrec /rebuildbcd
    Result:

    "Successfully scanned Windows installations"

    Total identified Windows installations: 0

    The operation completed successfully

I then ran a System File Checker command on the C: drive as follows:

    1. Sfc /scannow /offbootdir = C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows\

Result: “Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.”

Next, I obtained some disk volume information using diskpart commands as follows:

    1. Diskpart
    2. List disk
    Result: Disk 0 Online 238GB
    Gpt: *

    1. Sel disk 0
    2. List vol
    Result:

    Volume 0 D CCCOMA_X64F (Win10 1709)
    DVD-ROM 4.47GB Healthy

I then attempted to run bcdboot to copy boot files straight from a Windows 10 1709 DVD:

    1. Bcdboot C:\Windows /s D: /f UEFI
Result: “Failure when attempting to copy boot files”

Issue: The Windows PE environment does not detect any identified Windows installations. It also does not detect a C:\boot folder exists, and it says “Access denied” when running the
"bootrec /fixboot" command. How can I create a new C:\boot folder if I get a "Failure when attempting to copy boot files" error? I have exhausted my troubleshooting efforts on getting this BCD rebuilt. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Best regards,

    Jonathan

  4. Can I install/repair the bcd boot repair using a copy command from the disk from the...

How do I repair BCD error 0xc0000225 in a triple booted system?

I've got a triple booted system from my great-aunt to repair:
    It has:

    1. Win7 x86 Pro
    2. Win10 x64 Home
    3. Win7 x64 Ult

Each is on 3 different partitions on an SSD disk, in that order. This used to work, but not now, as I accidentally deleted the Win10 partition and despite my best efforts to undelete it... no joy.

    • When I boot to Win10, it gives BCD not found error 0xc0000225, while the other two boot up without problems. What makes this a little different is that the boot menu was that of Windows 7 before install, not the blue fancy graphic one we see in Win8 and Win10; almost like Win10 wasn't "boss". What speaks against this is whenever booted to Win10, it resided on C:, relegating Win7 x32 to B:, whereas when booted to Win7 x86 or x64, it resided on C:, relegating Win10 to D: and Win7 x64 to E:.

I've tried the following with no result, Win10 didn't boot up, and the other two booted up normally
(system restore isn't possible, there were no SR points made).

    1. Windows Automatic Repair
    2. Rebuild the BCD (at the Command Prompt I ran):

      Code:
      bootrec /scanos

      bootrec /fixmbr

      bootrec /fixboot

      bootrec /rebuildbcd

    3. I set the Win10 to active Partition with Diskpart using these commands:

      Code:
      diskpart

      list disk

      select disk 0

      list partition

      select partition 1

      active

This resulted in the system not booting at all anymore, going straight to
BCD failed to start error 0xc00000f

    edit:
    4. I forgot to say, I used a gui BCD editor (which I can't mention the name of for religious reasons), but it didn't help.

I've used a Win10 ISO USB to reboot the laptop (Lenovo Z50-70) to get into the Repair Mode, and I'm in the unfortunate position that my great-uncle, whose machine it was, isn't around to ask him questions about this machine.

Question: What else can I try to repair this?

I don't consider format+reinstall and similar solutions a repair, I'm sorry about that.
