    Can I keep build 1511? Hated 1607......

    Hello,
Does anybody know, if it is possible to keep build 1511 for good, do updates, but NO upgrades?

One day I forgot to turn the update services off, so I got the Anniversary one. Hated it. How can Microsoft change the look, change most setting, install loads unwanted apps – and all that against my will, permission or knowledge? It must be illegal......

This is ridiculous – how can they get away with it? Anybody I know is fed up with forced updates (and worse - upgrades), most people on the net – as I read – hate it.

    So fed up.

So I went back, and want to stay there.

In that just a little touch would suffice: Windows would offer it’s users Upgrade with…………..

“we made a new version, looks a bit different, we will default all your settings (don’t forget to change them back), and we will install a lot of unwanted apps (yes, those you spent hours uninstalling). But we added new stuff, so we think it’s worth the hassle…….I you want it, click here. If not, clik here”. Job done.

Back to the question. Can I keep 1511 and do occassional updates (when I choose to do so), or will they keep forcing 1607?

    :)

    Can i avoid Windows 10 1607?

    Hi,

I never updated my laptop from Windows 10 1507 (The first build) and i am trying to get Build 1511 because it is the last decent build of Windows 10. I tried updating to 1511, but now it says 1607 is installing. I HATE the Windows 10 anniversary update!
MS trashed the start menu, and the whole OS is a complete mess! Is there any know way i can avoid 1607 and instead update to 1511??

    Please help!!!!

Hello, if you wish to remain with -at some point- a build which will no longer be updated once the roll-out of the anniversary edition is complete- then you could.

You don't say if you have Pro, so I'll assume you have. With Pro you can defer upgrades.
You can revert to 1511 within 10 days.

If you turn updates off, you could apply them manually. There is supposed to be a way to set updates to notify only. With updates off, you would need to set up a scheduled task for Defender updates, if you use it.

My view of the anniversary edition:
    1. The start menu changed- doesn't affect me- I don't use it- I use Classic Shell which works properly.
    2. Some aspects of Settings have changed- well, MS's policy is to progressively move the old control panel into Settings. so we'll see more.
    3. I don't know what apps you're referring to.. I don't bother with Universal apps, and haven't made an effort to uninstall them. They don't bother me, I don't bother them.
    4. A minor display bug was introduced. A couple of long-standing issues were solved.

You can control and limit updates. You've just got to look at the options and read the many articles easily accessible with a quick search. Take action rather than join everyone complaining about forced updates.
E.g. set connections to metered. Use the tutorials here such as
Windows Update Automatic Updates - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Windows Update Active Hours - Change in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Thank you dalchina for an interesting insight.

I do not have a Pro, just Home.

Change to start Menu does bother me, because I use it - and do not like the new.

I was referrng to Metro Apps - love yours 'They don't bother me, I don't bother them'. However they do bother me: since I use the Start menu, I do not want to have there useless unwanted Apps. I uninstalled them (after days of reading), and all year my PC worked like a charm.

The problems began, after the Aniversary update (which I hate), and going back to 1511 - uninstalled apps reapearing for no obvious reason (at random, no update), others having dead entries in the Star menu (as you know from my 2nd post).

I've been deffering idiotic autoupdates since the beginning - after a lot of reading again - by turning the service off as well as settin the metered connection.

Your 'Take action rather than join everyone complaining about forced updates' is great and certainly a good advice, although a bit hard to follow if you have good and smooth system for a year, and unwanted Aniversary update changes that without you knowledge or consent, my system after going back is slower and a bit bumpy and contaminated by Microsoft push rubbish.
And I cannot go away to something else, as millions would, if there was an equal alternative.

Still - none of this answered if I can keep the 1511 build, or if they will force me the upgrade the nex time I check for the updates?

Is there no power in the world to deal with Microsoft?.............It's like the world-wide nature destruction, there is also no power to stop it.

I think, if someone developed a new OS, different but equal to Windows, Microsoft would be finished in a few years - they've angered most users, excluding my ex-girfriend, who does not care, as far as she can somehow use her PC and find programmes she is using.

AIUI even Pro users can't prevent an upgrade, just defer it. You'll get it later when it is released on the Current Branch for Business (CBB) instead of immediately on the Current Branch (CB).

Microsoft have released a tool called wushowhide for hiding updates that cause you problems. It's intended mainly for preventing device driver updates that turn out to be incompatible with your machine but works for all updates, including upgrades like the Anniversary Update. To be able to hide an update it has to be in the list of update shown when you check for updates. Use a Metered Connection to check for, but not download updates.

There's likely to be 1511 updates for quite some time to come, they're still updating 10240 !

We seem to be talking constantly - for whatever reason - about something else, dalchina, and not meeting at all. I wrote several times, that I've been turning off updates since the first day. But sometimes I have to turn them on, don't I? And that's what I was asking.

Thank you Bree, great, I hoped so. Still don't know how - the next time I check for updates - to prevent Microsoft pushing the Aniversary in against my will, but I will try the Microsoft hiding tool (maybe it could hide me too :-D)

    Thanks

Looking on the bright side the latest insider builds don't re-install apps you have removed so presumably that will trickle down into the next upgrade if you decide to upgrade to 1607 at some point.

They do still push new pointless apps on you (I got a game called Farmville 2 and some media app called Pandora last time) but apps I'd removed already (Candy Crush, Solitaire and so on) were not re-installed so it is better in that sense than the 1607 upgrade which re-installed everything.

Thank you for an excellent in view.

Wouldn't you happen to know - by any chance - the answer to my other post?

You seem to be the right person to ask, and moreover, you actually read the question :-D How rare these daysCan I keep build 1511? Hated 1607...... :)

All stoped beeing smooth after I went back from 1607 to 1511. The only solution I can see now is to manually upgrade to something I do not like or want, get on with it, and then spend hours (again) to uninstall all rubbish, go through all privacy settings, turning off telemetry again (it must be all illegal to install unwanted stuff and change your settings, or not?).
