Windows 10: can I move my digital windows license to a new computer?

I've seen this question asked a few times online but not with my specific circumstances. I have a windows laptop that I got from a friend with a failed HDD and I put a new drive in it and reinstalled windows 10 using the windows media creation tool and then updated it to windows 11 and at no point did I have to activate the license but now I am building a pc and if I don't have to then I don't want to buy a new windows license. In the setting's of the laptop it says the license is digital and linked to my Microsoft account. when I googled it said that I would have to deactivate the windows on

Transfer digital license from old PC to New one.

You would have to first ensure the Digital License is linked to your Microsoft Account. See instructions how to do that. You can then use the Troubleshooter on the new computer after installing Windows 10 to restore the license.

Please note, if your license was upgraded from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 7 license, it is not transferable.

Transfer digital Windows Pro license to new computer

I had a major failure on a Dell laptop that had Windows Home on it when I purchased it. I upgraded it to Windows Pro through the Windows Store and received a digital license. I purchased a new Surface Pro that came with Windows Home and I would like to move the Pro license from the Dell machine to the new Surface Pro.

I can see the Dell computer listed in my account and it shows that it has a Windows Pro license. I can't see any way to move the Pro license to the new computer.

Uninstalling a product key does not deactivate the license, there is actually no deactivation method. You would still need to contact support to actually invalidate the license on the old machine, so it can reactivate on the new machine.

Transferring the license is a step by step process.

First, you either remove the license from the machine by formatting it.

Install it on the new machine.

Contact chat support, then reactivate.

Where Digital license is handy is when you are still using the machine and reinstall Windows 10 and need to reactivate the license after a significant hardware change, such as a hard disk.
