Windows 10: Can I remap Caps Lock to the Win+S key combination?

I don't really use the Caps Lock key, which makes me want to remap it to something more useful. On ChromeOS Caps Lock is by default remapped to Search, which I think could be very useful to have in Windows. I tried using the PowerToys key remapper to remap Caps Lock to Win+S (the keyboard shortcut for the search function) but I am not allowed to do this. I also tried SharpKeys, which also didn't work. Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking I might be able to find the shortcut to the Search app and I could set it to run when I press Caps Lock if I can't get this to work.

Remap Caps Lock to Ctrl in Windows 10 without administrator privileges?

I found this question:

Which would likely work great if I had admin rights on my machine. But I don't.

I also found a couple of links about remapping keys without admin rights in Windows 7. The suggested solution is to use the following:

(Save in a file with .reg extension, double-click to apply to the registry, and then reboot.)

This is the same as the first linked solution except for the key to edit; the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key can be edited without admin rights.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work on Windows 10. (It applies and creates the key, but even after reboot the Caps Lock key is caps lock, not ctrl.)

In regedit I see that under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout there are subfolders (subgroups?) for "Preload", "Substitutes", and "Toggle". It seems likely to me that putting something in "Substitutes" might be the way to do this for Windows 10 but I've no idea what to put, and there is no documentation I can find.

Note: The original PNGs I found on Bing Images, but artist name wasn't given, I did alot of modifying in GIMP and iconified them myself though.

But....
Shawn you know how I like personalizing dry things like .bat, .vbs, and .reg file, right?

1. Well I created a folder for both reg files, and placed it in my Documents folder.
2. Then I created shortcuts to the desktop(using "Send to").
3. I placed the shortcuts in a folder on the desktop.
4. Then I customized the folder icon, and the reg file shortcuts(you cannot change the actual reg files icon, hence the shortcuts).

I did this so that I could run both files as needed from the desktop toolbar.

Hi Mel,

I believe we can go in and start hacking the registry to get this done, but there may not be another option natively in Windows. This 3rd party app however -
randyrants/sharpkeys - allows you to reassign key mappings and sounds like exactly what you need.

Let me know if this’ll work!

PS - side note, if you didn’t want to go that route, there is a way you can make the caps lock key make a noise if it’****. Settings - Ease of use - Keyboard - toggle keys (Turn on) - you’ll hear a ton whenever the caps lock key is hit. Not exactly what you
need, but at least you’d know.
