Windows 10: Can I retrieve my email, music and photos from an infected hard drive using a SATA to USB...

Hello:

Just got a call from my cousin in a different state who inexplicably fell for a version of the ransomware scam.

Now they want $400.

I think we all know the drill.

I told her to buy a new hard drive or purchase a SATA to USB cable from Amazon an reformat her hard drive.


She's leaning toward replacing her computer -- an HP laptop.


But it occurred to me after I spoke with her -- I wonder if she connects the infected hard drive to a good working computer can she retrieve her music, photos and saved email using the aforementioned SATA to USB cable.


Or, does ransomware make that unlikely?

Retrieving photos via Windows 10

If the hard drive on your old computer is healthy, your new PC should have a spare Sata port on the motherboard that you can connect the old hard drive to.

Make sure your PC is turned off when connecting or disconnecting the hard drive

Than in File Explorer you can browse the old hard drive and retrieve your photos and files . . .

Hi Eric,

To address this, kindly follow these steps:

• Right click the drive that has been connected to your computer through the USB.
  
• Click Properties on the drive and on the
  Tools page you will find "Error-Checking".
• Click Run. Please be careful if you're prompted to format the hard drive and don't go ahead with it as this will delete all the files in the drive.

If the repair still doesn't allow you to access the data then connecting it via Sata Power and Motherboard after removing the caddy is the only way to see if this drive is still functioning properly or not.
