    Can I Stop automatic updating/restarting?

I am having issues when the pc is turned on/booted, it gets stuck before windows loads. Sometimes it gets stuck showing "i-obit defrag" at startup. I have uninstalled the i-obit software; but, this defrag at startup is still active. Because of this, it takes me multiple tries (& frequently, Hours) to get this dang pc booted. I try to just leave it turned on; but, it seems to update itself & attempt to restart Far Too Often... So the question I have is: Can I stop this automatic restart? At all??

    :)

How can I stop Windows from doing automatic updates during active hours on my computer?

I have my active hours set from 8am-11pm and supposedly auto updates are not to occur during these times. But last night @ 7:15 pm, while I was in the middle of working on something on my laptop, it restarted. No warning, no message.
This has happened before as well. This alone makes me want to get a mac or some other non-Windows OS. I see this has been an ongoing issue, looking at posts as far back as 2016. Apparently nothing is being done about it and it's getting worse.

    Any suggestions?

There is a bug in Active Hours if it exceeds 12 hours. You need to keep it under 12 hours.

Here are some other ways you can manage Windows Updates in Windows 10:

    Option 1:

Set your Internet connection as metered:

    https://www.groovypost.com/howto/manage-windows...

    Option 2:

Use Show/Hide Updates tool to block the update:

Is there an option or work around to block updates or hardware drivers that might cause problems?

Yes, Microsoft has released a KB update (KB3073930) that will let users block or hide Windows or driver updates.

You can download it at the following link:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

    Option 3:

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: services.msc

    Hit Enter

    Scroll down to Windows Update

Select it then right click it

    Click Properties

Under the General tab, choose Startup type to DIsabled

    Click Stop

    Click Apply then OK

    Option 4:

Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro which can pause updates for up to 35 days or block them for a year.

Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation

Click the link ‘Go to the store to upgrade or enter a product key’

Click the $99 button to make your purchase (the price might vary by region or depending on the edition you are upgrading from or upgrading to).

Follow the on screen instructions to make your purchase.

Within 5 to 10 minutes, your system will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, your personal files, apps and settings preserved.

You won’t get a product key, you get a digital license, which is attached to your Microsoft Account used to make the purchase.

    Hi WSA.

I would go after the IObit.

First open Task Manager and look in the Start up tab to see if there are any i-obit references, disable them.

Then download and run Autoruns, part of Sysinternals.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/autoruns

This will show you the registry entries that are kicking off items. Again only remove IObit.

Thank you Ken. I followed your directions; but, am afraid to restart because I am not sure that the "defrag at startup" is THE (only) problem... (which is why I asked how to keep the pc from auto-update & restarting. It has become a source of frustration, just to get this pc to turn-on!) I appreciate your input, because it is more info than I found elsewhere. I will reply when I have to turn this thing back on! *Confused

    Hi.
I agree with Ken; IObit should go.

CHKDSK is usually a sign that the file system needs fixing of some sort. It also could be simply the result of Fast Startup being "on". (You'll want to turn it off, if it is on.)

Usually, if the dirty bit is set on a drive, it will give you an option at boot to "press any key to skip disk checking".

To check if your drive's dirty bit is set while in Windows, in a command prompt, type
Code: fsutil dirty query C:[/quote] If the response is that the volume is dirty, then you should let CHKDSK run at the next boot, to correct the file system. This could take quite a while, depending on the extent of fixes required, the size of the drive, drive health, etc.

You should also check your drive's health:
CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

Failing drives can exhibit slowness just before complete failure.

    Hope that helps.

  7. Hi WSA. When you process the info in the post above from simrick lets us know.

If you haven't already, copy your personal data off the machine. Everyone, and everyone should be in all caps, should have a data backup.

Machines and OS's die and then can be fixed. You can get Windows 10 right from MS at no cost to you and a clean install will fix a lot of issues. You can even try an in place repair / upgrade as a first step.

Lets see if you have a contributing hard disk issue.

    Can I Stop automatic updating/restarting?

I think the issue is fixed... I have restarted - unwillingly, a few times now... successfully! I have not been able to check issue that simrickbrought up because I am denied access when I try. Now, I understand that this would be an 'issue of access' on my PC... & all I know is that I AM the administrator on this PC... so any instruction on how to get me access to the "fsutil dirty query C:" is needed now... and THANK YOU for the info provided before!
