    Can I transfer my Windows 10 license to my new pc?


    I just got my new pc and I’m trying to move my license from my old pc. I’ve done a lot of research on this topic.

    Neither of my pc’s is prebuilt. I built them myself, but even though I bought the license separately it was sold as an OEM license, which would mean that I can’t trasnfer it over to my new computer.

    I did the cmd command which shows you your license type. In there it said OEM. But in the updates and security tab in the settings it said that my pc has been activated with a digital key linked to my Microsoft account. About a year ago I also swapped my mobo and processor of my old build. I still got to keep the same license after that.

    So is there a way to transfer it over to my new computer?

    Windows 10 upgrade license

    The interesting question is that: the upgrade takes place before 29 of July. If I upgrade the PC (change the MB), and I transfer the Win 8.1 license to this new PC (cause 8.1 is retail FPP), will I be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free? Or a upgrade license must be bought?

    It depends on how Windows 10 was originally configured on your computer.

    If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

    If its the free upgrade from a retail store bought Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

    If its the free upgrade from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is NOT transferable to a new computer or motherboard.
