Can I use a All in One PC's HDR capabilities if I use it as a monitor?

For my first pc i used to use laptop, I got an AIO all in one. I now have bought a better pc, that is not an AIO. My other external monitor doesn't have HDR, and this one does. However, I cannot seem to access it using an external pc. Is it possible to use the HDR capabilities of the AIO as a monitor? HDR-capable monitor becomes completely unresponsive when switching between SDR and HDR under certain conditions

I have the Alienware AW3423DW in HDR Peak 1000 mode. Here are the steps to replicate the issue:

The relevant system information is as follows:

    • Windows 10 version 21H2
    • Nvidia GPU with GeForce Game Ready Driver version 528.02
    1. Power on computer with HDR already enabled in Windows settings from previous session. The computer will start in SDR mode but will switch to HDR as soon as it reaches the lock screen.

    2. Launch an application that does not natively support HDR but which runs in exclusive fullscreen (e.g. a non-HDR supported game).

    3. Tab out of the game and switch off HDR in Windows settings.

    4. Monitor switches off and is completely unresponsive, after a few seconds the Windows "device disconnected" sound effect can be heard.

    5. At this point, the only way to restore the monitor is to unplug and replug the power cable of the monitor. Restarting the PC or unplugging and replugging the display cable does not work.

This is how I have manually recreated the issue, but the way it has happened to me most often is by simply alt-tabbing out of an application while running in HDR mode. If the application being tabbed out from is particularly resource-demanding and results in the monitor spending a long time switching between HDR and SDR, then it will completely fail and switch off, becoming unusable.

I have already tried reinstalling my graphics driver which did not help. How can I determine which component (i.e. Operating system, GPU, Monitor) is the point of failure that is causing this problem?

Setting up HDR on external monitor

Hi just got an HDR capable monitor, a
    U2718q
, and am using an HDR capable GPU (GeForce 1070). However, Windows 10 doesn't seem to recognize it as an HDR capable display. I followed the guide

HDR and advanced color settings in Windows 10
, and it says that HDR is not supported. Any idea how to fix that? It's an HDR capable monitor, hooked up via DisplayPort to an HDR capable GPU. I'm running Windows 10 Pro Version 1709, OS Build 16299.64 (just
updated it today), and also have the latest graphics card driver.

    Any ideas what to do?

HDR capability not detected by some games. Like games using the Frostbite engine.

    Hi TommyHildizzle,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

The Xbox feature in Windows 11 will automatically enable HDR (provided you have a graphics card with minimum performance requirements). In fact, Battlefield 1 and 5 games support HDR, so if your PC has HDR enabled automatically, the game will be enabled by default.

Given your situation so far, I would suggest you check here to calibrate your monitor's HDR functionality and troubleshoote that aspect.

Then turn on the "Auto HDR" setting by following these steps:

    1. Select the Start button, then enter settings.select Settings > System > Display.
    2. If you have multiple displays, select your HDR-capable display at the top.
    3. Turn on Use HDR, then select More options.
    4. Turn on Auto HDR.
    5. Go back to the game to see if HDR is enabled.
On the other hand, go to Start - Settings -Windows Update - Update History to see what updates have been installed recently and I can help you check the update history to see if any recent updates have reported issues with HDR.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.
