Windows 10: Can I use my Win7 Ultimate key to install/upgade to Win10 on new PC?

I bought Win7 in 2009 and got a product key. I was under the impression I could use that to upgrade to Win 10. The laptop I had at the time is long gone. The next laptop came with an OEM Win 10. Now I am about to buy a new one. I'd like to save a some money and buy it without an OS pre-installed. If I can, how to I use my Win7 Ultimate key to upgrade to Win10 or 11?

yet another Win10-clean-install-with-Win7-key question

I find much conflicting info, hoping for a definitive answer from The Community. I heard that the Win10 Threshold update now allows clean install using Win7 keys.

I have an empty hard disk and a brand-new Win7 Ultimate 64-bit install disc with a valid, never-used product key. Can I use the never-activated Win7 key to activate a Win10 clean install? Or do I really have to waste time installing Win7 then "upgrade"
to a clean install of Win10? Thanks!

 

Installing Win7 Ultimate Over Win10 Home to get Pro

Hello,

I'm about to purchase a laptop that comes with the Win10 Home pre-installed.

I do, however still own a license of Win7 Ultimate, so I should be entitled to Win10 Pro after upgrading.

Is it therefore possible for me to over-write the pre-installed Win10 Home with my Win7 Ultimate first (clean install), and then perform an upgrade, which would grant me Win10 Pro?

Can I use Win 7 Ultimate Key to upgrade new Win 8.1 PC to Win 10 Pro


While it's possible for you to wipe the drive and install Win7 Ultimate on your Dell, given that it shipped with 8.1, that means the key is embedded in the UEFI -- and that is (most likely) the key that the Win10 Upgrade will see. Also, the Win10 Upgrade does not allow you to choose the version (Home vs. Pro), as it provides the version that matches what you already have on the PC. And finally, presuming the other laptop came with Win7 Ultimate preinstalled, that makes it an OEM version -- which is tied to the original hardware and can not be used on a different PC.

So, the only way that I see that you can do a Win10 Pro upgrade is to first, upgrade your Win8.1 to Win10 Home, and then, purchase a license to upgrade Win10 Home to Win10 Pro.

Others may have different suggestions...
