Windows 10: Can no longer adjust sound after v1903 upgrade

I finally got Windows 10 version 1903 installed. But now I can't adjust the sound anymore.


I used to have a program or driver that came with the computer called HP Audio Control. With it I could increase the high frequencies for either the laptop speakers or the headphones. I am hard of hearing, and the Audio Control helped a lot. But now I can no longer adjust those high frequencies the way I need to. I downloaded a new Audio Control from HP (Realtek High-Definition Audio Driver for Windows 10 v1903). I can adjust the frequencies with it, but only globally. I can't have one setting for speakers and another for headphones anymore. How do I get it back to what it was before the upgrade to version 1903? I can't keep the upgrade without that setting.

"Ding" sound (e.g. from adjusting volume) no longer plays

When adjusting volume on Windows, the system will play a "ding" sound to help you gauge the current volume. That sound no longer plays on my machine.

What I've done:

• Tried various output devices (speakers, headerphones, monitor speakers, etc.)
• Updated mobo and sound card drivers
• Played the .wav files (C:\Windows\media) in a media player to ensure the files are not corrupted

Methods that SHOULD play the sound but don't:

• Adjust volume
• {Windows_key} (search) --> type "sound" --> {Enter} --> "Sounds" tab --> Scroll to "Default Beep" --> click "Test"
• Running some batch file that echoes 0x007
• `echo ^G`

Streaming video, sound adjust automatically

Corrupted or outdated drivers may be the possible reason why the sound adjusted automatically. To efficiently assist you, kindly answer the following questions below:

• Have you made any recent changes prior to this issue?
• Which build and version of Windows 10 are you using?
• Does this happen only when streaming videos?

In the meantime, I suggest you follow these methods to troubleshoot your laptop:

Method 1: Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

Follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
• Change View by from Category to Small Icons/Large Icons.
• Click on Troubleshooting.
• Select Hardware and Devices and follow the on-screen instructions.
