Windows 10: Can no longer rename + replace a file. It keeps the original, which I have to delete.

This week the Dropbox update changed all kinds of settings on my MacAir. It deleted every folder I'd saved to my Sidebar in Finder, for instance. Worse of all, I now have a Renaming Problem.I frequently save Files and Screenshots to my Desktop to rename and put in Folders later. But now I have twice the work because no matter how I rename a file, it keeps the original too. So I have to delete that too—all day long! Is there a Setting that allows you to Name & Replace files? Thank you!

Errors on creating, renaming, deleting folders in explorer

Thanks for that will get on it.

In meantime, the folder name, rename, delete issues and related error messages in part is just because windows explorer has suddenly started requiring a refresh for each step to show the new folder for renaming, then again after it has been renamed etc. So I have to keep hitting F5 for every step in the process including the moving of files from one folder to another. Is there a solution to that? That would be part of the probelm solved and I can then see if there are any remaining problems.

Tha bit has been solved by a restart of explorer. I will watch for any remaining issues and folow dalchina's advice should they still be present.

 

File renamer utility?

Is there a good file renamer utility that's safe to use anyone could recommend? I used to use Gizmo's list for app suggestions but this particular application has not been reviewed in several years, so I don't know if those apps are safe to use or not.

I have many files I need to rename but keep the individuality of the names. For instance, I need to rename all files in a particular folder from yyyy.mm.pdf to AMEXyyyy.mm.pdf keeping the yyyy.mm data unique. Another folder has a ton of files that need to be renamed from yyyy.mm.pdf to Visayyyy.mm.pdf.

I had all this figured out a month or so back but have already forgotten how I did it using an arcane script in either cmd prompt or powershell, I can't remember which. And now I'm drawing a blank how to do it. Again. smh. So I thought a nice freeware file renamer might help me out.

Hi Mazik3n,

The location field shows the internal syntax ("\\?\") if the file path exceeds the MAX_PATH limit. You can delete or rename the file using the internal syntax, as below:

From a Command Prompt window, type:

• del "\\?\D:\username\Downloads\filename.jpg"
  

Of course, replace "filename.jpg" with the actual file name.

If that doesn't help, follow the other methods here, especially 7-Zip/WinRAR.
