Windows 10: Can only boot windows in safe mode after moving nmve ssd to external enclosure

I moved an nmve ssd with Window 10 Professional on it to an external enclosure outside of my laptop Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme gen 2, hoping to boot from the usb type C port. Secure boot is off, and I can freely boot ubuntu and arch linux from the external enclosure different ssd.Windows goes into a "recovery loop" where I see the spinning dot circle for a while, then the computer reboots. After a couple reboots, it goes into windows recovery mode. I ran the "startup repair utility" which didn't work, I have tried setting the boot device to the external drive which doesn't work. Disabling Optane and Installing NMVe SSD

I've been trying to disable the IBM Optane RST in my system in preparation to installing a 1 TB NMVe SSD in the M.2 slot

With no success. I'm new to Windows 10 and all the fancy-schmancy gizmos like Optane RST memory and the like so....

My biggest hurdle seems to be disabling the Optane and switching the mechanical harddrive over to ACHI

Here are some screen pix of my system's bios.... showing specifically the SATA and Optane related parts. BIOS is latest & greatest

















And as an afterthought, do I need need to turn off boot protection?





I also tried Mr Brink's tutorial steps on ACHI turn on after installing to no avail

(Enable AHCI in Windows 8 and Windows 10 after Installation)

 

Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10  


I am stuck in Safe Mode in spite of following all the suggested steps to go back to Normal Startup - Like opening file location of msconfig.exe & running as Administrator. The computer I am trying to get out of safe mode has just been updated from Windows 7.

 

Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work.
The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;

• stopping startup items
• uninstalling hardware drivers
• removing recent software
• running troubleshooters at boot
• sfc scan
• diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running

Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?
Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciated
