Can only use "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" as my graphics driver

Newer Graphics drivers contain an audio driver also. So the fact that audio is affected can still be a sign of a bad graphics driver.

But if your games are using the on board or a dedicated audio chip and this happens it can indicate a problem with either the graphics card, audio card, or the motherboard.

How many things on that list have you tried/tested already?

Other than swapping out my motherboard I'm really not sure how I could test it.

Could the audio card really be video related BSOD?

I stress tested the graphics card so surely it would have caused the crashes/errors whilst stress testing it?

Can only use "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" as my graphics driver

Every single time I have tried a different driver I have used DisplayDriverUninstaller. Sadly it doesn't aid in fixing my problem *Sad

If your monitors are hooked up with HDMI, then the system uses the audio drivers included in the graphics driver. If you can, try using a DVI connection for the video and plug the speakers into the sound ports on the M/B. That's if you have discrete speakers and they are not built into the monitor.

My main monitor is hooked up via a DVI cable, only my second monitor is connected via HDMI and I have already tried unplugging that before and it made no difference.

Also I am not using speakers for my PC. I use a headset which is directly plugged into the back of the PC in the green and pink ports as standard.

I see that you have already tried a number of things. But I am missing one thing:

You say that you know, with which driver version, still under Windows 7, the problems began. Have you ever tried installing an older driver again? It will then not be the newest one (obviously), but I mean, after all, with an older driver the problem did not happen...

AMD do not seem to store archived versions of older drivers. I managed to find a site with the 15.7 driver however it would only install Catalyst Control Centre and not the actual driver itself. I am unsure as to which was my last working driver as I don't think I kept my driver up to date much until I installed 15.7.1 I presume I was using the 15.6 driver, however I cannot be sure. I do have a version of that driver installed however I tried reverting back to that when I was still using Windows 7. I will give it a shot running that.

The main reason I haven't tried using a lot of older drivers is because all drivers except 15.7.1 and 15.8 are listed as not being supported by Windows 10 and are reported as causing a lot of issues.

Also I ran a program named WhoCrashed and I took a screenshot of what it was picking up as the cause of faults, it is almost the same information as bluescreenviewer however it makes it more understandable:

Taught me to keep my old drivers on a external device for reasons like that. So many posts and issues i seen in past with AMD Catalyst drivers. Would be a slim chance was something else, other then those drivers, maybe a conflict with another driver on system.

    Sure Event Viewer shows similar.

Have you turned off Windows automatic driver updates (Device Installation Settings)?
    1. Search : Device > choose: Device Installation settings
    2. Select: “No, let me choose what to do”
    3. Uncheck: Always install the best driver software from MS

The reason I ask is that if you are completely removing the old driver then you should be ready to install any compatible driver, regardless of its age. The fact that you can only install the control panel makes me think that a more recent driver is already installed. If Windows is finding and installing the newest driver each time you restart that could explain your symptom.

Okay so I went into the device settings and noticed that mine was setup as this:

This explains where the rogue Catalyst Control Centre kept appearing from whenever I uninstalled driver and then restarted. I will try installing 15.6 when I get home from university tomorrow. Also just a quick question, is it safe to install drivers using Device Manager (ie by clicking update driver and then manually selecting the catalyst driver folder)? This seemed to be the only way for me to install anything that isn't a windows 10 version as the option to install the driver will simply not be listed on the installer.

Yes. it's safe, as a matter of fact sometimes it's the only way.
BTW. I collected many AMD drivers from long time ago, if you need a specific version I can send it to you.

I had the 15.6 beta driver saved on my pc so i tried that but the error persisted.

Just to make sure, are these settings okay for my R9 280x, I think they are okay:

Also CountMike, any old driver versions would be most welcome. Preferrably 15.5/15.6 stable drivers would be good to test with. I presume the original driver I had was either 15.5 or 15.6 before I updated to 15.7.1

The issue seems to change depending on what quality I am viewing. For example If I am watching a standard 1080p (or lower) video on youtube I will not get the display driver stopped responding error, however I will get the audio glitches instead. It seems anything above 30fps causes the "Display driver stopped responding" error however as mentioned before high fps games don't cause the issue at all. I would love this to just be a simple "replace this component" fix but it doesn't look like It's gonna be this way.

I seem to be able to watch videos out of fullscreen for a while however it seems that after a while it will start causing the audio errors and error messages. This is initially why I thought it was a component overheating as it will start to happen more frequently the longer my PC is turned on. Even just viewing the page for this forum will sometimes give me the error message.

Above you wrote that you do not know, which driver exactly you were using before you switched to 17.5. Maybe try something even older? (I know that is not ideal with regards to Windows 10 compat, but who knows, maybe it helps.) Old versions of Windows, Mac and Linux Software, Apps & Abandonware Games - Download at OldVersion.com might have according versions - although I have only found an old version from 2010 on that site.

Apart from that: Have yo already checked, if other people have the same problem? With most issues, you are not alone. Maybe what others did, helps you as well...
