Windows 10: Can only use "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" as my graphics driver

I have looked it up and a lot of people do have these same problems however most are solved by things I have already tried such as adding a TdrDelay or cleaning drivers before installing new ones. 15.7.1 seems to be a driver causing a lot of issues but most people reported that switching back to 15.7 fixed it, I have already tried 15.7. If their problems were not resolved a lot of forums were just left with no reply so I have no idea if they managed to fix it themselves or if they still have this problem to this day.

I have tried pretty much every suggestion I have seen and I have had this issue for a month now so it has been a month of researching a good couple hours everyday before I finally gave up and just left it for the night only to try again the next day.

There are so many things people list as the cause for this error but it would be impossible for me to do all those things. Some of them were:

• Replaced Hard drive
• Replace motherboard
• Replace power supply
• Replace graphics card
• Replace RAM

Following that advice essentially means you buy an entirely new PC to fix 1 problem....

 

What I would do is completely get rid of afterburner and any and all other tweaking or overclocking stuff and run the card at stock settings. That would probably eliminate the problems.

 

I only ran afterburner to show you what it is normally set as. I don't often use it, I just thought maybe I should have been using specific clock speeds and that was what was causing the issues.

 

Not necessarily.

1) Replace Hard Drive : this is just bad advice. If it were the hard drive it would affect more than just graphics.
2) Replace Motherboard: it may come to this, but you've got to do all the other tests first.
3) Replace Power Supply: you can do the multimeter tests or borrow a power supply to test this.
4) Replace Graphics Card: again, borrow a card and try it. When I've had this problem I substituted a much older, less powerful card and the problems disappeared. Pretty obvious.
5) Replace RAM: again, you can test the RAM with Memtest86+, you can run the rig on just one stick, you can switch the one stick out - try them in different configurations. Many tests can be done without buying anything.

One of the worst problems to have is to pre-decide what can and can not be a problem. I have never had good luck with this approach. You need to assume that anything could be the reason, even the things you do not want it to be.

I suggest you try all of the tests I posted earlier. By process of elimination you will uncover the culprit.

 

Especially true since had BSOD to begin with. I had explorer.exe crashes in Windows 8.1 i posted in BSOD part of eight forum and helper made me test just about everything, CPU,GPU, Memory and Hard drive, as turned out though my problem was due to another software.

I've already tried using other RAM so I doubt it's that.

Surely if it was the PSU it would also do the same thing with games? Especially considering games are much more taxing than simply browsing the Internet.

I don't see what replacing the graphics card would prove since I am pretty sure it's the drivers for graphics card, and if I were to use another card then it would use other drivers which would be almost guaranteed to work. I could maybe give it a go but I don't have any old cards to spare and my dad will be reluctant to take his out of his PC.

Well, I can certainly see why you would want it to be the driver that is the problem. You can always come back to the card if you've exhausted all possibilities regarding drivers.

 

Windows doesn't seem to want to install that version of the update, instead it gives me version "15.200.1062.1004" which I believe is the same driver version as what catalyst 15.7.1 installs for me.

I remember a few days ago I was going through my files and I found that there is a folder where it stores windows update drivers so is there any way you could find this folder and send me the driver that you mentioned?

 

Where did you find it ? I can't, on the other hand I already did Disk Cleanup, maybe that's why.

 

I didn't find it anywhere. I allowed windows to update my driver from the basic display adapter and that's the one it gave me. What old versions of catalyst do you have saved? I'm willing to try any version at this point as I really want to be able to play games with my friends again considering I haven't been able to play for over a month now
