    Hi, I really need some help please. I have a reasonably new, good quality HP laptop, connected to an LG external CD/DVD writer.


    I am using VLC player. DVD's are recognised and play with no problems, but CD's won't play and aren't even recognised. I have tried using different programs, iTunes etc, with no change in result.


    I have an old Windows XP laptop, and with the same exterior device connected, DVD's & CD's work perfectly.


    I would very much to like to rip my large collection of CD's to my HDD, very frustrating that I haven't been able to.


    I have refreshed the drivers for the device, I have the latest available.

    Issues with playing cd and dvds through Windows DVD Player on Windows 10.

    I realize the inconvenience you are experiencing with .Windows 10.



    This issue might occur if DVD player is not installed properly.



    To assist you to better, please provided us the information below:

    • Which type of DVDs have you tried to run through DVD player app?
    • Are you facing issue through both CDs and DVDs?

    I suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the DVD player app on the computer.

    Windows DVD Player installed in Windows 10 but not recognizing DVD to play

    Hi,

    Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

    The DVD Player app only supports the following:

    a. DVDs from a file backup is not supported, the app currently only plays DVD movies on optical discs.

    b. The App will only play DVD's not Blu-ray discs.

    If you satisfy both the categories, I would suggest you follow the steps below and see if it helps:

    Update DVD/CD-ROM drives from Device Manager.


    • Press Windows key + R key. Type "devmgmt.msc" and click Enter.

    • Expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives.

    • Double-click on the DVD/CD-ROM drive.

    • In Properties, go to Drivers Tab and click on Update.
    If this does not work you might have to Uninstall and then reinstall your drivers in compatibility mode.

    Follow the steps to uninstall and reinstall the driver.


    • Press Windows key + R key. Type "devmgmt.msc" and click Enter.

    • Expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives.

    • Double-click on the DVD/CD-ROM drive.

    • In Properties, go to Drivers Tab and click on Uninstall.

    • Reinstall your audio driver from Manufacturer's Website in Compatibility mode.

    • Restart your system
