  1. Can QueryPerformanceCounter return negative timestamps?

Dear community, this is my first time asking a question here, so apologies if I am in the wrong place or have framed the question incorrectly. In our software, we use QueryPerformanceCounter and QueryPerformanceFrequency. We were under the impression that QueryPerformanceCounter could return negative, but increasing, timestamps. However, some searching online suggests that on Windows, getting negative timestamps from the high-performance timer, even if monotonically increasing, is a sign of a problem in the system, perhaps even a BIOS configuration issue. For example, see the following discussion

  3. Windows 10 timestamps

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I can understand, how frustrating it can be, when things don’t work as expected.

I'd be glad to help you.

Please answer the queries, mentioned below:

    • Were you able to install Windows 10 successfully?

    • Did you check, if it is present in Windows.old folder?

    • Where exactly are you trying to check, if the TimeStamps are present?
I would suggest you to follow these steps below to retrieve files manually from Windows.old folder and check, if it helps.

    • Enter This PC in the search box, and then click on
This PC in the search results.
    • Double-tap or double-click the drive that Windows is installed on (typically, the C: drive).
    • Double-tap or double-click the Windows.old folder.
    • Double-tap or double-click the Users folder.
    • Double-tap or double-click your user
      name.
    • Open the Windows.old folder that contain the files you want to retrieve.
    • Copy and paste the files that you want from
      Windows.old
folder to a folder in Windows 10.
    • Repeat steps 5-7 for each user account on your PC.

Please feel free to contact us if you face any issues with Windows.

    Thank you.

    Can QueryPerformanceCounter return negative timestamps?

My laptop screen turns negative for a second then returns to normal

Whenever there's an error message or
notification (e.g. plugging in mouse/unplugging the mouse, a confirmation message), my laptop screen turns negative for a second then returns to normal. It
only turns into negative when it's on the home screen or something that isn't on
full screen. It does not go negative whenever I play games (e.g. League of Legends, DoTA 2) or whenever I watch a video on fullscreen. I want to have something to fix it before going to a technician if it doesn't have one. Please help! It's
getting pretty annoying because I often use my flash drive and its turns into negative for a second whenever I plug it.
