Windows 10: Can shutting down or sleeping mode affect the Windows update installation?

At the end of my working day I actually hit the update button and then my laptop started installing the new Windows update (version 1903). It takes longer then I thought and I really need to return home! What might happen to the update installation if I shutdown or simply close my laptop?

Windows 7 sleep mode shutsdown

Just a quick update: Windows no longer reverts back to the BIOS after sleep mode. I used CCleaner to fix the registry and that did the trick
