Windows 10: Can someone point me in the direction of the 'real' upgrade benefits

Discus and support Can someone point me in the direction of the 'real' upgrade benefits in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; and features such as the always on updates is a major, huge problem in my opinion. No long ago I took my backup laptop, which had automatic backups... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by riddell, Dec 23, 2015.

Can someone point me in the direction of the 'real' upgrade benefits

Here's a thought. If you were more proactive and applied updates regularly, at more opportune times, you wouldn't be in the problem of updates getting applied when you don't want them.

I always shake my head at people who don't apply any updates, or upgrades until they have to, and then they have tons of problems. Those problems would not have occurred if they had simply kept current. But oh well...

I have no idea what you mean by "expanding tree faults".

What about the scenario I am very commonly in where I have absolutely zero faults? and my machine is running very nicely, smoothly, fast and reliable? In fact I never seem to have faults asides from those that are constantly present and MS never fixes such as the 'expanding tree faults'

Like many professional people I have several hard drives and networks that I access regularly. I know what I am doing, my directory structures and where I want to store or locate things. As a photographer I have terrabytes upon terrabytes of data, and deep complex directories.

Windows explorer worked perfectly in XP in my opinion. Since then there have been several very annoying issues such as.

    1. Forcing libraries on people
    2. Forcing cloud storage on people.
    3. Having CP links in explorer.
    4. The left panel folder links not expanding when I go deep into a directory structure, meaning I cannot easily see or navigate.
    5. or using other options it always expands to the bottom so you can't see it.
    6. Not having 'save as' as a simple default so I can put things where I want with my defaults.

and several similar other problems. They are all well documented and complained about on the internet.

I'm not going to get into an argument that you think libraries and cloud etc. are better, if you like them fine, whatever.
But its not good for me and I should be able to configure what I want.

Looks like I'm using that stuff completely opposite way although for similar tasks.
Windows Explorer was always worst file managing ever invented, Total Commander instead.
Libraries are not "forced" never used them.
Started using One Drive only when I got Windows Phone, had it turned off until than.
" Having CP links in explorer" ??? Why ?, There's settings though.
'save as' was always left to applications to administer.

After using both Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, I prefer Windows 7. I know this OS very well and though it might be a few micro-seconds slower it won't make any difference to me and I don't see any other advantages in Win 10 and I can live without the eye candy. The thing I hate most about Win 10 is the sneaky ads. They're all over the place and most linked to MS. Little popups appear from the right side of the screen. As for apps, I bought a $10 one to use with my Windows 8.1 Surface RT for watching MKV files on my server and it didn't work. I complained to the author who said there was a bug and finally corrected it a few months later. I converted my Lenovo W540 i7 laptop to Win 10 because it was loaded with terrible Lenovo software but I find I don't use it much now. I converted another computer to Windows 10 but used a new cloned SSD so I can use switch to Win 7 when ever I want just by moving the connections.

To be honest, I just don't trust MS as there are no free lunches and I'm not sure the whole story is available. They seem to want more and more control over how my computer functions. I don't leave my computers on all the time so MS updates often take over control until fully installed and I have no control over what is installed. If and when they drop support for Windows 7, I'll probably take my Win 7 machines off line and continue using them. That's my 2 cents and probably there are some that will not agree and that's okay. I've been using Windows since before Version 3.1 and just turned 80 years old so Windows 7 will surely out live me.

I also had a working system using Windows 7 Pro which I did decide to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro via a clean install. I use the PC for photography and as an audio workstation (DAW) . Like you I have many files (photographs and audio) across my own disks and directory structure.
My system has 3 monitors all calibrated and profiled and a 26 in 26 out audio interface.

My reason for upgrading was to ensure ongoing compatability with the latest DAW software and drivers which are constantly updated. I do not use many of the "novelties" that came with W10.

However - after a short learning curve to set things up the way I like them:
I have no problems using my old familiar disk and directory structure for data files - libraries and cloud are not "forced" on me.
I actually came to like the tiled startup arrangement to the extent that I cleared my old desktop shortcuts.
The set up of the SSD drive was simple and handled correctly by W10 and there has been no issue with my spinning drives.
I have set up Windows to advise me of updates - that way I choose when it is convenient to do so (same as I did in W7)

Whilst the above are not compelling reasons to upgrade - hopefully they may take away some of the fears of doing so if you decide to go ahead.

I agree with Dave that once you learn how to customize Win10 to your liking it can easily replace Win7 while having everything remain very familiar. As I don't have a touch screen I use StartIsBack to get my Start menu back, I applied the various Registry tweaks posted on numerous websites to restore the old familiar clock and volume interface, made IE my default browser, used 'Spybot Anti-Beacon' to easily disable Cortana and all the telemetry stuff. If someone sees my desktop and how I work with this computer they would really think it was Windows 7.

I set my updates to 'Notify but do not download' so I can do them when it suits me, though I never wait too long. Apparently folks who are running the 'Home' version of Win10 can only get automatic updates so the more expensive versions do have that added feature.

So, while I'm not rushing to update my other 3 computers from Win7Pro to Win10, I at least now know that it's not such a big deal and I what I'll end up with can look and behave very much as I'm used to. At the same time I will have access to whatever improvements Wn10 has to offer.

The real reason to upgrade is that with the upgrade you will always be current and will always get updates as they come out. There will be more stuff coming for windows 10 as things go along and less for the old stuff.

I am driving an 18 year old car and love it. The car has 70K miles and will probably last for another 18 years.

Same with the OS. There can be as many upgrades as you want, if I don't need the function, I can care less. Security updates are a different species and should be applied.

Again. I don't understand what you mean by "expanding tree faults". The words are English but make no sense in the way you are using them.

What exactly is an "expanding tree fault"? What exactly does "zero faults" mean?

You're not forced to use libraries. You can always hide them and never use them. You're not forced to use cloud storage. I have no idea what "CP links in explorer" means. What exactly doesn't have a "save as"? File Explorer has never had a "save as" button. What would it save?
