Windows 10: Can the System Drive be a Dynamic disc

Can the System Drive be a Dynamic disc and if so what are the issues?

I have a 500G System drive and another 250G drive both SSDs.

I would like to shrink the system drive to 250G and combine the remaining 250G partition with the other 250G drive in a 500G stripe set. But to do this I think the System drive would have to be a dynamic drive.

It seems like I remember trying this a long time ago on Windows 7 and I had issues when I tried to restore a backup.

I use Macrium Reflect Free to do system image.

I am trying to find out the issues first because I think once you change to dynamic it is hard to go back to a basic disk.

can a recovery drive and system repair disc be used on 2 different machines that use windows 10?

my desktop is zoostorm windows 10 pro but i also have a windows connect tablet with windows 10 home on it. if i create a recovery drive and a system repair disc on the desktop, can use them on the tablet? i cannot create a system repair disc on the tablet
as i does not have a cd rom drive and i tried creating a recovery drive on a stick on the tablet but it failed. thank you

As the OS drive would be a simple volume I believe this is possible. Not that that I would by any means recommend it, for multiple reasons.

Macrium Reflect free does not work with dynamic disk. I believe that is the case with most free such utilities.

RAID0 works best with identical drives. You would be combining a 250 GB disk with a 500 GB disk which would be shared with the OS. That does not seem to me a good idea at all. This would compromise the performance of the RAID volume, possibly to the point that it would be slower. If these were conventional drives that would be a certainty.

Bottom line is that this would be a complex system with dubious performance advantages.

A simpler configuration would be to use the 250 GB drive for the OS and the 500 GB drive for data. It would work with Macrium Reflect free and performance is likely to be as good as and possibly better.

I haven't mentioned the drawbacks of RAID0 itself.

 

I think you are right the issues are make it not worth it. I will still create the partition but make 2 separate drives. Simpler to keep backed up etc.
