Cannot add printer shared by Windows 10 to Windows XP.

    Hi.

I cannot add a printer that is connected to a PC with Windows 10 installed. Client OS is Windows XP.

When I try to open "\\WIN10COMP" and doubleclick on printer name, I get: "Operation could not be completed. Access is denied.".

When I try to add this printer using master, after entering credentials I get: "The credentials supplied are not sufficient to access this printer. Do you want to specify new credentials?".

I can browse a shared by Windows 10 folder, create, edit and delete files in that folder, though.

How can I add that printer?

    :)

  2. Folder and printer sharing no longer working since upgrading to Windows 10

I have a Brother HL-2240D printer connected to my main computer via a USB port. The computer was running Windows 8.1. I shared the printer and added it to a Windows XP computer on my home network. I then upgraded the Windows 8.1 computer to Windows 10. I
plugged in a new Windows 10 computer on my network and tried to add the shared printer. It sees my other Windows 10 computer but not the printer and I cannot add it. I went back to the Windows XP computer and although the shared printer is still listed, it
cannot no longer connect to it.

I checked the computer with the printer and it is still configured to be shared. The sharing options for the current profile (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings) are to set to “Turn on file and printer
    sharing”.

In addition, I have several shared folders on my main Windows 10 computer. The Windows XP computer had those shared folders mapped as drive letters. They can no longer be accessed. The new Windows 10 computer cannot map network folders on the main computer
(it does not see the main computer but it does see the Windows XP computer).

Folders shared on the Windows XP computer and the new Windows 10 computer are accessible from the old Windows 10 computer so the loss of access is only one direction (the other computers cannot get into the main Windows 10 computer but the main Windows 10
computer can access going out to the other computers).

What needs to be done so the other computers can access the shared printer and shared folders on the main Windows 10 computer?

Thanks to anybody who can help me out.

  3. Connecting to a shared printer

I cannot connect to a shared printer on my home network. The printer is connected to a desktop computer running Windows XP connected to the router via CAT5 cable. My laptop is running Windows 10 connected to my router via wireless. The Windows XP computer
is not a member of a domain but rather a Workgroup. The sharing properties for the printer on the Windows XP computer are set to allow all users to print. I can see the printer in the Add Printer dialog window on my Windows 10 laptop. I have tried most of
the obvious methods for adding a printer to no result other than failure. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Frustrated to say the least.

Same here, I can't get it.

I tried disabling SMB2; connecting by IP and NetBIOS; putting different users; downgrading 128 bits encryption to 40/56 bits; changing the way Windows manages workgroup...

Have you found any solution? I think it is a bug...

Due to such problems with printers on a network I replaced mine with an HP Laserjet and an HP Officejet that both connect by cable to my Wireless Router then any computer, whether wired or wireless, that I install the software as Networked can access them. I use the printers with Win7, Win8.1, Win10, Mac OS X and Linux Mint. Only issue I've had is in getting Linux drivers for the Laserjet as HP doesn't provide them for that model, the Officejet is supported.

Cannot add printer shared by Windows 10 to Windows XP.

If the printer is Shared and online, the drivers for the XP OS are also on the Windows 10 machine. Windows 10 should display it as a discovered Network Device.

I have a Brother HL-2280DW that is connected Wireless to my network. Anything we have to do from our iPhones or my wife's iPad, I have a Latronix Print server. The cost for the next step up with the capability to print from iOS, was more than what I got the Lantronix server and the Laser for.

  9. Experiencing problems using Win10 networked printer on network containing older PCs, specifically Win7 and WinXp, in common with so many others. Finally got working on Win7, but not yet on XP.

    Situation
Have installed a Win10 pro PC on company network. Shared out folders, after some little difficulty.
Installed USB connected dot matrix printer; this works on the Win10 PC.
    Shared this printer over network.
Could not install this printer on existing Win7 or WinXP PCs, receiving 'access denied' message.
After lots of research, discovered could install on WinXP PC as local printer using a network port, but still could not print to this installed printer.
Tried very many other suggestions from web posts; none worked.
By accident, discovered Win10 PC had configured itself as member of homegroup (Network and Sharing Center) as well as having been configured as part of company's WORKGROUP (Control Panel/System).
    Removed from homegroup.
Win10 networked printer will now install on Win7 PC; can print to this Win10 printer from Win7.

Still cannot print to this printer from XP, though.

This info might be of use to someone.

    Take care

    Mike

  10. I have solved
I have physically taken the printer and installed it on the xp pc.
Then I get it back to the windows10 pc.
I have changed the port on the xp pc from
    usb
    to
    local (where local is \\windows10pc\nameoftheprinteronwindows10pc

Remember to use simple name for the printer on windows 10 (I did not use spaces)

    And it worked

    Hi there

Here's an extract from a reallyold post I made -- Works for W10 too.

    ..............................................

    Hi Mods
Maybe you can make this a sticky -- often comes up and I posted a solution yesterday which works.
    ..............extract from previous post .....
    Hi there
I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

    1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

    2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

    3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

    4) Create NEW port==>Local port

    5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

    6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

    Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.

If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

    Cheers

  12. I have read your post and got some hints, but it continued not to work.
When I was on the xp machine and selected the printer it asked for user and password.
ALthough I had the same users and psws in the two pcs (and I used them) it did not work.
Maybe the difference is in the Xp version (professional or not)
    The workgroup is the same

Cannot add printer shared by Windows 10 to Windows XP.

    Hi there

you have to enable network and printer sharing on both PC's. Does the W10 see your printer when you try and check it with \\printername or \\ipaddress if it's a network printer (I.e not connected to a computer but just to a LAN either via cable or wifi).

If you are accessing the printer from W10 machine it will need a W10 driver (probably X-64). The XP driver is a 32 bit one. A w8 driver might also work if you can't find a W10 one and often even a W7 one will work too.

    Cheers
