Windows 10: Cannot backup Outlook.pst - API call error, Access is denied. 80070005

Hi family.

I have two backup programs that I use to backup various files. My problem is with Outlook.pst. This is a new issue for me, it has never happened before.

When trying to backup Outlook.pst with alwaysync I am now getting error API call error, Access is denied. 80070005
I am getting the same error now with my Outlook 2016 backup plugin , the plugin works but hits the denied error. This tells me it is something other than the software or the plugin. I don't know if it is maybe a win defender issue or what it may be, I am stumped.
I have checked permissions for both the outlook.pst file and the default folder it sits in documents/outlook files/
I have full permissions with both.

Anyone have any idea why this may have all of a sudden started? I'd be ever so grateful.

Win 10 64 up to date/Office 2016 up to date.

Cannot open your default e-mail folders. File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Outlook Files\Outlook.pst

 

Cant Change Apps Instalation Folder

80070005 means access denied. Can you translate that message for us?

 

When Outlook is running it locks its .pst file, so it cannot be accessed.

But if you shut down Outlook the .pst file will be unlocked, and it will be accessible for backup.

In the past were you backing up with Outlook running? Or with Outlook not running?

 

Hi mate. Outlook is never running. This happens when I just open windows and my backups start. I have also checked what is running at other times that this happens, unfortunatly that isn't the issue, I wish it was that simple.

Perhaps some other program has the file locked?
MS puts in lots of new stuff under the covers, and with multiple revisions in the past year I'd not be surprised to find some surprises.
(For example ... ctfmon is back. It disappeared years ago when I moved from Office 2003 to Office 2007. Now it's back! Dunno why.)

Anyway, do you have Lock Hunter? If not, get it. It's free.
Right click on any file or folder and select from the context menu "What is locking this file?"
Do that to the Outlook.pst file and discover whuzzup.

 

Thanks man, I've never heard of Lock Hunter, when I wake up after the famous 3 double shot espresso's I have to have to operate in the morning, I'll boot up the PC and give it a go. Thanks!!

 

I tried that Lock Hunter, it says its not locked by anything. Still getting following error in allwaysync and still cant use backup plugin for outlook. Really weird

All my software and OS are legitimately owned.

Disabling Kaspersky Internet Security has no affect.

 

Quite bizarre.

I opened start menu, asked Outlook 2016 icon to run program as administrator.
Opened Outlook 2016 as Admin
Closed Outlook 2016 / Backup plugin started and ran without error
Opened my Allwaysync program and asked it to manually start backup of of Outlook 2016 (without outlook running of course) Backup completed without issue.

So running Outlook 2016 as admin and closing outlook, seems to allow the apps to backup.
I tried running outlook again without admin privileges and again backups failed

Freaking weird in my opinion.

 

Just a thought but do you have auto archive enabled in Outlook?

 

Hi there!

Never, I always disable archiving all together. I don't see the point in it. I am pretty anal when it comes to outlook due to the important messages and private info I have to deal with so I deal with each email as it arrives. I either save it to a specified folder that I always have access to or I delete it.

Who is the owner of the outlook.pst file? What are the file permissions?
I ask because your backup error says that access is denied: Code: API call error, Access is denied. (80070005), filename: Error while copying "E:\Documents\Outlook Files\Outlook.pst" to "E:\_Backup\OUTLOOK 2016 PST BACKUP\Outlook.pst", fs::copyitem::access_denied[/quote] If the "user" who is running the backup does not have permissions to read the outlook.pst file, then the backup will fail.

If that's the case, find out who is running the backup. Is that YOU? Or an admin account.
Add the appropriate permissions to the outlook.pst file.

I've had lots of problems with Windows 10 regarding permissions. Every new computer will not allow Firefox to save downloads on the desktop ... until I open up permissions on the Desktop folder.

Oddly enough, Firefox would download to the Downloads folder with no problems. It was all about permissions.

That happened on my work computer. It happened on my new home desktop last year (Win 10 Anniversary). And it happened again last week when I got the Win 10 FCU update.

The default permissions on a fresh Win 10 install are just fine in many cases, but not so in other cases.

 

Always Admin. Permissions are correct for Admin related users. I know what you mean about permissions and win 10 can sometimes be a pain especially with extra drives.

The thing is I wouldn't be able to use my pst with Outlook if the PST file didnt have the right permissions, running as admin or not. Yet it wont allow a backup unless I check the run as admin in the icon, or right click and open as admnin, then all of a sudden backup works. Quite odd.
