Windows 10: Cannot change laptop screen brightness unless I restart Generic PNP Monitor

Hello, I have an Asus GX701 with an RTX 2070, and I am having an issue with my screen brightness/drivers. I cannot change my screen brightness by just using the OS slider, or using the laptop keyboard shortcut. It shows the slider moving, however, the actual brightness doesn't change. In order to change the brightness, I have found that I need to disable the Generic PNP Monitor driver, move the brightness slider which doesn't change the screen brightness, then re-enable the driver. The screen brightness will go to whatever the slider was at when I re-enabled the driver, but after that I can't change the brightness unless I do the same thing.

Not sure if this is related, but I've also had an issue where YouTube videos will not display just shows black in the video player until I reinstall Nvidia drivers. Windows 10 and Nvidia drivers are all up to date. Would appreciate any help, thanks!

I would suggest you follow steps to update the monitor driver:

Press Windows + X keys

Choose Device manager

Click on Monitors

Right click on ‘Generic PnP monitor’ and click on update driver

Tap on Browse my computer for driver software

Tap on Let me pick from a list of available drivers

Choose ‘Generic PnP monitor’ and tap on Next

When you are done please restart the computer.

 

What is generic pnp monitor driver?

I connect my laptop to Dell monitor, I use only 2 screen in setting but my FPS is decrease. When I disable generic pnp monitor driver, FPS is normal. Why? What is generic pnp monitor driver?

2. Have you made any changes on your PC, prior to this issue?
   

I suggest you to follow the methods mentioned below and check if that helps:

Method 1: Update display drivers. Refer the following article for steps to

update drivers. If the issue still persists roll back to previous display drivers. Follow the steps mentioned below.

1. Press ‘Windows + R’ key together on your Keyboard.
   
2. Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ and hit enter.
3. Expand the display adapter option from the list.
4. Right click on the driver and click on ‘Properties’.
   
5. Click on ‘Driver’ tab and check for ‘Roll Back Driver’.
   
6. If the option is available roll back the driver restart the computer.
   

Method 2: Choose Generic PNP – Monitor. Follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Open ‘Device Manager’ and click on ‘Monitors’.
   

1. Right click on ‘PnP – Monitor (Standard)’ and click ‘Update driver software’.
2. Click on ‘Browse my computer for driver software’ and choose ‘Let me pick from a list of available drivers’.
3. Select ‘Generic PnP Monitor’ and click next and restart your PC.

Method 3: Disable adaptive brightness. Follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Right click on the battery icon on the taskbar.
   
2. Select ‘Power Options’.
   
3. On the left- pane, click on ‘Choose when to turn off the display’.
   
4. Select ‘Change advance power settings’.
   
5. Extend ‘Display’.
   
6. Extend ‘Enable adaptive brightness’
   and then select ‘Off’.
