Windows 10: Cannot change local Windows 10 login to Microsoft account login

So I have been pulling my hair trying to Google-fu that's a verb, btw the answer to this. Everything I can find either doesn't line up with my circumstances precisely or about 89% of the time there's an answer, the person answering is not understanding the exact issue and/or offering advice that doesn't work.I currently login to my Windows 10 machine via local account. I have no issues logging into Windows; my current local password works 100% correctly when I login from a boot/reboot or wake up from sleep.When I go to account settings and attempt to change my login from my local account t

Using login credentials is best practice, and is going to be more and more among the norms. You can bypass needing a password if you're NOT using a Microsoft account. But if you are, that's an online linked account...wouldn't make any sense to be able to automatically login to a sync'd account without credentials would it?

If you're using local accounts or non-domain accounts, you don't need to have a password to login. See link above, you'll be able to make the changes you need by following that, in a few minutes your frustrations will be gone. *Toast :toast:

I don't login with a microsoft live account if you mean that, I had a local account from windows 7, that did not change.

 

Changing Existing "other accounts" to family by changing local login to microsoft account login?

I have installed Windows 10 on a new laptop and set up Microsoft Account logins for me and my family including children, which is working fine.

I have now also upgraded Window 7 ultimate to Widows 10 on my older desktop. I have changed my account login to the same Microsoft Account as on the laptop which has worked fine. The accounts of my family members have now appreared under family but as blocked.
Their exising accounts on the desktop are under other accounts. I have tried to change the local logins for their "other accounts" to their Miscrosoft Account logins but when asked to type the old password in one more time nothing happens.

I have also tried the same with allowing them to login using their microsoft accounts under family, but this still doesn't allow them to change the local logins to miscrosoft account logins.

Can anyone tell me how I can get my family member's accounts currently under other account moved to family by changing from the local login to Miscrosoft login?
