Windows 10: Cannot Configure Xbox Elite Controller on Alienware Windows 10 PC - bogus error message?

I am attempting to configure the advanced button mapping features on my Xbox Elite controller for use on my PC. The Xbox Accessories app sees the controller Bluetooth connected and indicates it needs to be connected via USB to configure it. However, the controller is connected via USB to the PC. I have tried multiple USB ports and I have updated my drivers, both from Dell Alienware and Windows. I do not find any glaring conflicts or alerts for USB or controller messages in the various system config apps.Has anyone encountered similar issues?
