Cannot connect on Ethernet in Win10

I cannot seem to connect on Ethernet though Wi-Fi works OK. I have seen several articles about ethernet problems with Win10 and perhaps you can help me sort this out.

    CABLING
    First the network config:

Two notebooks, C and D are plugged into a switch and the switch plugged into the router.
Now, the cabling is verified to work because computer C, running Win7 connects just fine and if the internet cables are swapped, computer C still connects just fine.

Computer D however does not connect. I did some other things to redundantly check too, just FYI.
    So cabling looks OK.

    ROUTER
both computers have fixed (reserved) IP addresses in the router.
    The router sees computer C
    but not computer D
Just FYI, if I turn on Wi-Fi, the router sees D on WiFi, but not the ethernet.

    PING
    Computer C can ping D
    Computer D can ping C
Computer C can ping the router
Computer D cannot ping the router

    So, what's not working?
Some investigation suggested the following, all of which I tried with no better results:
    - Update the network adapter drivers (already current)
    - Winsock posible culprit, so NETSH WINSOCK RESET and reboot - no change

IE used to find and fix these things pretty well, but here we have EDGE. Perhaps I'll try to install IE. Connectivity diagnostics are where IE shined over Chrome and Mozilla.

UPDATE: IE 9, 10, etc. are not compatible with Windows 10. So, the connectivity diagnostics just not as good in Win10. I can tell I am getting tired, as it's getting hard not to swear.

    UPDATE: Added a pretty picture.

    :)

Windows 10 Home installed; Wireless issues

Upgraded to Win7 to Win10 Home 32bit using the Microsoft Online Download tool.

Wireless download speed went from 86MB with Win7 to .89MB with Win10. Manufacturer does not offer an updated Win10 Driver for the Wireless card. Connected via Ethernet...speeds are fine...but its a Laptop and running it with an Ethernet connection takes
    away its portability.

I am at a loss as to what to do...surely cannot use Laptop with wireless download speed at .89MB.....it crawls.

    WIN10 Login Password- VPN

    1. Upgraded from WIN7 - computer is set to auto login into net through a VPN, ethernet connection.

    2. WIN7 was not set to have a login for access to computer.

    3. WIN10 login is requesting a login to access computer - obviously through the net.

    4. Cannot login as no ethernet connection due to VPN login not being activated - because cannot login in to computer through WIN10 login etc

    5. I did not specify a WIN10 login on startup - but - did download from MS site Solitaire and Freecell (both requiring a MS account)-has this activated a WIN10 login request.

    6. How do I get into my computer to remove the WIN10 login.

    7. Have read several online articles that recommend using WINRE - as this is the registry! how do I get to it without having to go through the WIN10 login?

    Hi SOHO1,
Remove the AC cable, remove the battery, remove Ethernet cable, press power button for few seconds, let the laptop rest for a while, reconnect everything and see whether it helps.

No need for that with modern OS's and other devices.

The OP may just have something screwed up, if they have been mucking around in the Services and/or Registry.

Thanks for that info, he could also disable windows update updating the drivers and get Ethernet driver from either Dell or the card manufacturer.

Cannot connect on Ethernet in Win10

That is true, but Windows/Microsoft update will install the latest tested drivers for hardware, which uploading what you may think is the latest from the mfg website, is not always the latest.

The OP is getting into too much detail in their description of what is going on. IE is already installed, so do not know how that they think they can install it.

If I had to make a wild stab at the OP's issue. It would be most likely caused by some sort of third party Internet Security software or they are trying some odd form of IP Scheme. The last is that they had a thread started about Hyper-V. That is another issue that they need to look at.

This person is all over the place on what exactly they are wanting to do. Both on this thread and the other one. They are mucking around in the registry, mucking around with Hyper-V,

They are running a mix of Home, EDU, OEM, Pro. The OP just needs to be straight forward and only concentrate on the specific machine that they are having issues with and stop reserving IP's on the router for the machines, which does not work without the proper switch and gateway.

I set Static IP's on those devices that I do not want to have to go hunting for them on the network (Lantronix XPrint Server, Brother Laser, A/P's, NAS, TED 5000). Other than that, all tablets, iPhones, Desktop, Laptops get a Dynamic IP sent to them from my Cisco RV-320.

If the OP wants us to completely solve their problem, with very little information, other than I can pretty much guess what the issue is from their four different threads.

Lets see if you are getting a proper IP from the router, copy and paste this command into a Command prompt
How to Open a Command Prompt in Windows 10
Code: ipconfig[/quote] Run that command in your Windows 7 Computer and the windows 10 computer and post the results. Before posting the Windows 7 computer results make sure it has a working internet connection.

    I'm back, with IPCONFIG results...

OK, so I still cannot connect on Ethernet.
WiFi works fine, but if I turn WiFi off, I cannot connect.
Yes the darn thing is plugged in.

You mentioned "too much detail" but that was just to head off "are the cables plugged in, did you try swapping, etc." Yeah, was trying to say I unplugged and plugged and swapped everything reasonable to suspect. The problem in my win10 notebook config.
    - All drivers are updated. Yes I've downloaded all the latest updates from Dell support.
    - The GW has reserved IP addresses and the adapters are configured to use them, though perhaps I broke something along the way.

With the WiFi turned off, the IPCONFIG for the problem adapter looks like this:

I am expecting Ethernet to work but it's not.

Yes Bro, I am working on a Hyper-V problem. The VM is how I noticed I was only getting internet connection on Wi-Fi and not on the Ethernet card. The notebook is fairly new, so I don't know that I ever had the hard-wire working. Just never noticed.

    Final update:

    Resolved.

I figured out that the adapter was not using the address as configured somehow. I found this by looking at some other posts in these forums. So, the Hyper-V virtual network switch had taken over the IP and changed the adapter to not have any value. In my novice use of Hyper-V I had intended to merely share the adapter between host and VM. I deleted the virtual adapter and reconfigured the physical adapter and performed the winsock jig (netsh advfirewall, int, winsock) and it seems to be working again properly. I can mess with the VM another time.

Hyper-V is a Virtual Machine. Yes there is a problem with it, because of the network problem that is currently in the 10586 rollout.
