I have the MS Display adapter and I purchased it when my Surface Book was my main laptop. I connected it to the HDMI port and the USB port of my TV. I then swiped the right corner corner of the Surface screen (Action Center) and clicked Connect and then choose the Microsoft Display adapter. I would see on the TV MS logo and it said trying to connect to MS Display adapter. At first it always failed and I had to try again and it always worked on the 2nd time. Now I have a Surface Book 2 and it always works on the first attempt no matter what TV in have the adapter connected to. Now I did remember updating the firmware when I first purchased I used it last month at a hotel and it worked fine. MS Display adapter is compatible with all Surfaces so there is something wrong. Do you see it trying to connect or is there nothing on the screen?

The MS display adapter isn't an internal display card it's a device that is plugged into a TV or Monitor to display you computer screen to that device. It's similar to Miracast but proprietary to Microsoft. It only works on my Surface's and not my Alienware. It's like HDMI but wireless.
