    Cannot format brand new HDD

Purchased a WD 6TB Blue yesterday, ran disk management and created one partition using NTFS. Formatted and did its thing but it just displays the total size of the partition with RAW next to it. Tried reformatting again to NTFS but I get the error; "The format did not complete successfully".

Deleted the partition and tried to create a 2TB partition out of the drive with the exact same scenario happening again. Tried swapping between GPT and MBR with no success. Also tried a different SATA port with a different cable and same thing.

Ran Windows error checking and WD LifeGuard on Extended Test over night and both came back with no errors.

Ran Disk Part in cmd, after entering in clean i get the error; "DiskPart has encountered an error: The device is not connected. See the System Event Log for more information."

Code: Log Name: System Source: VDS Basic Provider Date: 26/11/2015 11:38:34 AM Event ID: 5 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Tims Description: Cannot zero sectors on disk \\?\PhysicalDrive0. Is there anything else I can try or is it just a dead HD?

    :)

  3. Windows 10 repair

Thanks for the reply. I figured out how to wipe the HDD, ran the Windows 10 installation from a flash drive and it says it is unable to create partition on the HDD. I tried to DISKPART and wipe/format whatever on the HDD and it said something about it
could not wipe it critical hardware error or something along them lines so I'm assuming Windows 10 **** on me and ruined my brand new HDD along with my DVD drive cause it no longer reads discs after upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 and all of this
hardware is brand new bought myself and put together 2 weeks uptime at most until downloading microsofts virus.

    Cannot format brand new HDD

Is there anything else I can try or is it just a dead HD?[/quote] Hi there
You have to make it a GPT Disk -- then it will format OK if the HDD is not broken.

You can do it with command prompt (as administrator).

The Max size a non GPT HDD can be is (I think) 3TB. Your 6TB HDD will format easily once you've converted it to GPT.

If it still doesn't work then you've probably got a defective HDD.

    You could try this

download any LINUX live distro on to say a USB drive - then try and install on the new HDD. If it formats and installs you can wipe it again and re-format for windows.

even if you've never run Linux you can simply stop the whole process once the HDD has been partitioned by the install process. Simply then re-boot windows and re-format.

    Cheers
