Windows 10: Cannot get 5.1 to play out of Realtek (Optical)card other than in test

Cant get any audio on Realtek Digital Output (Optical) if I select DTS Interactive (5.1 Surround), the only option which is 5.1 in my settings. If I use the 44000 Hz or 48000 option on 2 channels I get audio. On supported formats, DTS Audio does not output any audio, not even when I select the DTS Interactive (5.1 Surround); the only the one that does is Dolby Digital. If I play the test Dolby Digital under Supported Formats on 2 channel 48000Hz or 5.1 DTS Interactive (5.1 Surround), I hear 5.1. This is the only time I can hear all the channels, even if it is selected on 2 channel under Advanced.

Clearly it is outputting audio to those channels despite it being on the 2 channel option. Why is the test the only place I can get audio to play on 5.1 and why does DTS Interactive play nothing? I want to note that through all of this Windows is attempting to play the audio (I think) as it shows audio playing on the mixer.

The motherboard is an Asus Z87 PRO w/ Realtek integrated, Win 10 version 1909, I could not find the exact model number of the sound card.
Please refer to the screenshots of the properties window incase my explanation doesnt make sense.

Edit: I cannot get the site to attach a second screenshot but the Realtek control panel does not help at all as it has less options than Windows properties does.

Movies App kills sound output after 1607 update - Realtek Optical Output

This was a bug that appeared some time back that had been patched, but seems to have re-appeared.

The issue is that when Movies app content is played, the sound card output is muted. Muted for all applications. The movie still plays, just no audio. It remains muted until Movies app is closed, and the other apps are restarted. VLC for instance.

I 'think' this is configuration specific but I have not done any other hardware testing. The PC has a standard Realtek soundcard using their Realtek HD Audio Manager, and is using specifically the Optical TOSLINK output. I believe that is the problem configuration.

My guess is that the Realtek card driver is not compatible with 1607 in the same way. Perhaps they patched it for previous versions so that the bug seemed to go away. But has resurfaced.

Since Windows ultimately must be compatible, I hope you can use this feedback to verify the issue and take corrective actions with Realtek or whatever you did last time.

I remember I used some work around like, opening Movies, then playing something using VLC, then playing Movies.. some combo like that worked until one day that step was no longer needed. Hope that helps.

 

Optical Drive Issue

Appreciate your detailed return. Your added steps really helped.

Assuming I did the steps correctly, this is where I am now.

Screenshot 12 shows my CD Disc shortcut on my desktop.
Screenshot 10 shows the CD Drive shortcut listed in the “Send to” listing.
Screenshot 11 shows the “Send to” listing after the steps were taken, but the CD drive name is not listed.

So, it appears the steps did not work for me. And, I did try the steps, “If it still won’t do ……” and still no luck.

What do you think?
