Cannot Install Windows 10. Installer hangs upon reboot.

Hi everyone. This is my first post on this forum, and I have registered because I cannot upgrade or clean install my pc to windows 10. I am running windows 7, and was able to upgrade to windows 8.1 easily, but i did not like the new interface and found it too cumbersome, so i downgraded back to windows 7. I have tried both clean and upgrade install procedures, and neither work. I would rather upgrade because i do not want to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my programs. Anyways regardless of the procedure that I attempt, upon reboot, the PC just hangs at the 3 dots during the first stage of the install. The only choice i have is to reboot the pc, and when it does i get a message saying that windows 10 failed to install. I have a legal copy of windows 10 that I bought from best buy, so i know it can't be that. I've also updated all the drivers directly from the manufacturer's websites, to help rule that out. Please help! the PC that i am having this problem with is listed in my information.

    :)

  2. Another bricked laptop

I just attempted to install Windows 10 on my Thinkpad X61. The laptop is now a brick (and software licenses are trapped on the hard disk). It took nearly 12 hours for the installation to "check for updates" after which it took another very long time to install
Windows 10. Upon reboot it hangs on the initial Windows screen.

What is the best way to get Windows 7 back, Windows 10 is clearly not to be trusted.

  3. KB3189866 Network Drives Problem

    Unsuccessful.

    As per above I

    - Uninstalled Nortons Security & Rebooted

    - Ran Norton's Removal Tool & Rebooted

    - Did a clean d/l & install of Norton's and rebooted

    - Updated Norton's until no more updates available

    - Via Windows Update d/l & installed KB3193494 (KB3189866 in disguise) and Rebooted

*** Got dreaded "cannot connect" message upon sign-in

    - Via Windows Update d/l & installed KB3194496 and Rebooted

*** Got dreaded "cannot connect" message upon sign-in

    - Via Windows Update uninstalled KB3194496 and Rebooted

*** Got dreaded "cannot connect" message upon sign-in

    - Via Windows Update uninstalled KB3193494 and Rebooted

    *** Drives connect upon sign-in

Empirical evidence that something in 3193494 (3189866) is causing the issue. The patch notes even mention touching the SMB code.

I even tried one of the other workarounds mentioned on the web and converted to a local sign-in account with no luck. I am back to a MS account.

I have now installed/uninstalled 3193494 (3189866) more than a dozen times. Network drives cannot connect with the patch, can connect if I uninstall the patch.

Cannot Install Windows 10. Installer hangs upon reboot.

First, if you have a legally activated Windows 7, the upgrade to Windows 10 is still being activated for free by Microsoft.

Second, exactly how are you trying to upgrade your Windows 7 to Windows 10? Since you purchased Windows 10 from Best Buy, did you get a USB flash drive with it? You should be inserting the flash drive with Windows 7 running and run setup.exe from it. It should not ask you for a product key, just upgrade your Windows 7 to 10, and you can save your Windows 10 product key for future use.

Yes, it is a legally activated version of Windows 7. Purchased about 3 years ago, if my memory serves correctly. I did get a flash drive with it, and that's how I've been trying. It will get through the first stage just fine, but once I get the prompt to reboot, the install will hang on the blue windows logo with the dots frozen in place, not circling around as they normally do. And when the pc restarts back into my windows 7 desktop I get a message similar to this post:

Windows 10 USB Installer Stuck On Blue Logo

Now, it would seem that based on that post, my motherboard, or some driver on it could be causing a fault, but a friend of mine has the exact same board in his system and he was able to install it just fine using the upgrade option. I really don't have the $$$ right now to build a new pc, and this new windows really looks like it's as solid as xp was.

Did you plug the usb stick into the usb port directly below the Network port? I would think the other USB ports do not have the drivers installed during setup which would explain why setup was hanging (trying to connect to the source it started the install from). At least this could be a reason.

Yes, what @JagoWU posted is true - the USB flash drive should be connected to a black USB 2.0 port on the back panel of the motherboard itself.

Also, everything should be disconnected from the computer other than what is absolutely necessary to do the upgrade, which is basically mouse, keyboard and monitor and the Windows 10 USB flash drive.

If the upgrade fails again, you can see if a clean install will work by shrinking your current Windows 7 partition and making a new partition for Windows 10. Then you would have to actually boot the computer from the Windows 10 USB flash drive and install Windows 10 to the partition you created for it. That would set up dual booting with the Windows 7.

Cannot Install Windows 10. Installer hangs upon reboot.

I tried that as well, but it will not even load the install screen, the system just hangs at the windows logo with the dots, the dots don't even move. I have plugged the usb into every 2.0 port on the back, but the same thing keeps happening. I am wondering if it just my motherboard that cant support the install-asus nagami a8n-la.

Is your USB stick loaded using FAT32 or NTFS?....I believe it should be FAT32 for W10.

You have Windows 7 running now, correct? I would download a brand new ISO file:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Select download tool now. Run the tool, select the option to create media for installation on another PC. Save the ISO file to your hard drive.

Mount the ISO file in Windows 7 using a program like WinCDEmu:
WinCDEmu - the easiest way to mount an ISO. And more...

Run setup.exe from the mounted ISO file. For one thing, the Windows 10 on the USB flash drive is probably outdated and you will get a newer version downloading a fresh file.

Also make sure to have all anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-anything programs disabled or uninstalled.

Yes, it is a windows 7 edition. I kept every setting from the tool unchanged except one. By default, the architecture was selected as 32 bit, but I unchecked the box to keep the settings the same, and changed the architecture to both. the rest of the settings on that page remained untouched and i am now in the process of making the iso. Microsoft Security essentials has been disabled, as have all other anti-anything programs.
