    Cannot Open Hyperlinks Outlook 2010

I have scoured the Internet, tried a variety of things, but none have fixed an inability to open a hyperlink in Outlook 2010. I believe this started when I uninstalled Firefox and Adobe Acrobat Reader temporarily.

Upon clicking on a hyperlink in an e-mail in Outlook 2010, I get this error message.

"This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator".

Uninstalling, reinstalling, and changing default browsers (IE, Edge, Chrome, Firefox) does nothing. I am at wits end. ANY suggestions would be very welcome.

Notes: Opening hyperlinks from Outlook.com works fine. Outlook 2010 as in Office 2010 does not work.

    Thank you.

    Phil

Outlook 2010 E-Mail Hyperlinks Are Truncated At The "&" Symbol When Sent To IE11 In Windows 10

When I click on a hyperlink in Outlook 2010, IE fails to open the correct webpage if the hyperlink contains an "&" in the link. The hyperlink is truncated at the "&", and often a message is displayed indicating that the URL cannot be found (or sometimes
only the homepage at the website opens). I can copy the entire hyperlink and paste that into IE 11 and open the page, but not by directly clicking on the e-mail hyperlink itself.

Tried resetting IE settings. Chatted with MS support -- their solution: Use Firefox!

(But, unfortunately neither Edge or Firefox is completely compatible with Norton Internet Security, at least at this time.)

    Hi Phil3.

First lets ensure your browser has all its default file extensions associated with it.

Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps on left side > scroll to bottom of right side > set defaults by app > find your browser and ensure everything you wanted associated with it is. (I left PDF's with Adobe.)

Then go back to defaults apps and a couple of lines up is "Choose default app by file type". When the list is produced scroll all the way down to .url

Ensure this is set to "Internet Browser" (not your browser or another app, generic Internet Browser).

    Please test.

Maybe another member will have another idea.

    Hi,

I did as you suggested, but regrettably, no change. It is interesting that nothing is amiss if I click on a link in an e-mail in Outlook.com, all is fine. The problem is confined to Outlook (as in Office 2010).

I have been trying things for three hours, and can find no way to resolve whatever it is. Pretty unbelievable, and all the Internet solutions I am willing to try do not work. I am not comfortable editing the registry.

    Phil,

This problem is caused by problems in Windows [Control panel, Internet options] and merely comes to light when a
hyperlink is clicked in an Office application. The root cause of the fault is a Registry error regarding the handling
of .html files and nothing to do with Outlook at all. This is a well-known problem with a long-established fix so you will be right as rain afterwards.

The Microsoft KB on the subject is at Hyperlinks are not working in Outlook KB310049. You can use
    • method 2 [resetting IE in order to alter Registry settings through the UI]
    or
    • method 3 [editing the Registry directly in order to achieve the same result].
If you use method 3 then note that there is a stupid typo in it, the Registry key you need to check is actually HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html [i.e. there is no space in the middle of it]

With regard to your concern about working on the Registry.
    • Perhaps you could look at it without altering anything i.e. step through method 3 but just read the current values.
    • Then run method 2 and look at the Registry keys again afterwards to see how they have been changed.
There might be other problems in the future that can only be fixed by manual Registry editing so you could treat this as a learning exercise.

Please note that you can safeguard any work you do in the Registry by exporting the relevant Registry key before altering anything
    - right-click on each key, Export, choose the .reg format.
    - if you do make a mess of things you can double-click on the .reg file afterwards, give the file permission to run** in the dialog boxes that appear and the Registry key will be returned to the state it was in when the .reg export was made.

** The correct term for actioning a .reg file is actually "merge" rather than "run".
