Cannot play or rip audio CD in DVD RW drive using Windows Media Player on Win11 PC

I've tried to play this audio CD on 2 Win 11 PC's. CD plays fine on standalone DVD player via stereo receiver.I believe I've seen this problem in the past but I'm so old, I cannot recollect how I corrected issue. Why am I thinking this a drive configuration matter which is why I've included Disk Management screenshot.

  3. Issue with Windows Media Player ripping CDs

    Hi Emma,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble ripping a CD with Windows Media Player, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:

    1. Update Device Drivers: Outdated or incompatible device drivers may cause problems with CD/DVD ripping. Visit Dell and external player support sites to download the latest drivers for your external CD/DVD player. Install them on your computer and reboot if necessary.

    2. Check CD/DVD compatibility: Make sure the CD you are trying to rip is not scratched or damaged. Some CDs may have copy protection to prevent ripping. Try a different CD and see if the problem persists.

    3. Disable audio enhancements: Windows' audio enhancements sometimes interfere with CD ripping. To disable them, right-click the volume icon in the system tray, select "Open Sound Settings", and then click "Sound Control Panel". In the "Playback" tab, select your default audio device, click "Properties", navigate to the "Enhancements" tab, and check the box that says "Disable all enhancements". Click "Apply" and try ripping the CD again.

    4. Remove unavailable locations: The Windows Media Player error “Windows Media Player cannot rip one or more tracks of the CD” will appear when Windows Media Player holds broken rip music locations. The corresponding solution is to remove these locations.

    5. Improve the quality of the ripped music: You might be seeing the error message because you’re trying to rip the CD to a low quality. If that’s the case, you most likely circumvent the issue by ensuring that you’re ripping to an improved audio quality.

    6. Clean the CD: Scratches and smudges may cause Windows Media Player to have trouble reading the CD, which can result in issues ripping certain songs or an entire album.

    7. Try a different CD/DVD ripping software: If Windows Media Player continues to have problems, consider using a different CD/DVD ripping software. Rule out if the problem is with the CD.

    8. Reset Windows Media Player settings: If none of the above step's work, you can try to reset Windows Media Player to its default settings.

If you have exhausted all of these options and are still unable to rip the CD, it is recommended that you seek further assistance from Dell Support or the manufacturer of the external CD/DVD player.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely

  4. Cannot play or rip audio CD in DVD RW drive using Windows Media Player on Win11 PC

Windows media player can't play/rip new audio cd's

I've been having trouble playing and ripping audio cd's with windows media player recently. My computer will recognize the cd and Windows media player will have all the information (Artist, album, song titles, etc), but when I try to play the cd, the songs
will not play and just skip to the next track every second (No sound plays, it just acts as if the tracks were unplayable). The same thing happens when trying to rip the cd. This only seems to happen to newer cd's, as second hand cd's will play and rip just
    fine.

Curiously though, cyberlink Power DVD will play the cd.

    EDIT:

I have found a fairly easy workaround, although not a complete solution.

Since other programs can read the cd, I brought the cd up in Exact Audio Copy and was able to read it. From there I just exported the files uncompressed and then could open them up with WMP and do as I please with them. It still doesn't explain why my WMP
can't read cd's, but it's allowing me to get my music into mp3 format at least..
