Cannot read USB Drive "The Parameter is Incorrect"

    Please help!
I am using am iMac with Bootcamp running Win 7. I have just upgraded to Win 10 with no problems. Except I can now not read my 2 x WD USB external drives. I am getting "the parameter is incorrect" error. In disk management it says the drives are active but RAW. If I connect the 2 drives to any other machine either Win 7 or 10 they are fine, so no fault with the drives. These 2 drives have always been used on the PC in question when running Win 7.
I have tried changing the drive names etc but still cannot read.

My only solution may be to connect the drives to another PC, back up, then format the drives?

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

    :)

  2. What does 'parameter is incorrect' mean?

I'm trying to read files off of my external hard drive (which previously worked fine) and now I'm getting the error message "Parameter is incorrect". Please help! This drive has my pictures and some programs on it that I need to access.

    • External Hard Drive Western Digital WDBAAU0030HBK-01
    • Formatted as NTFS, shown as "RAW" in disc managekent
    • reattaching Drive-Name / Drive-Letter did not resolve the problem

Glad I'm not the only one. Weird thing is the drives work OK on another PC running windows 10. Desperately seeking a solution.

  6. Me too.

Unfortunately I do not have a second drive with enough capacity to test whether reformatting under Windows 10 would resolve the problem.

Was the drive attached to your system when you made the upgrade?

    Cheers

Hi Christian, no the drives weren't attached during upgrade. I also upgraded my laptop to 10 and these two drives are perfect on this. Just not on my PC. Not sure if it's worth contacting WD tech support, probably not. I've searched the web for a possible solution but nothing. I may have to revert back to Win 7 which I really don't want to do cos I'm really liking 10. But I need to access these drives.

  9. Maybe it is not an Windows 10 exclusive issue.

    See: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/...eter-incorrect

Maybe this might do the job for you:

"chkdsk /F /R /X H: where H: is the drive letter. (Please run this from the CMD prompt and ensure you are logged in with ADMIN. Keep in mind that this may or may not work and as such you MAY lose your data on this drive."

Checkdisk stops at "Phase 4" when I try. But the filesystem ist identified as NTFS correctly. Maybe that could be a solution for you.

EDIT: Process did not stop, but I think the process will need time!

    Cheers Christian

If its anything like the issues I had with my RAID controller it might be a driver issue with W10. You may try manually installing a Windows 7 or 8 driver for the drives and see if that helps. Manually installing the W7 x64 drivers for my RAID controller solved my issue. I know it doesn't explain why they would work on your laptop maybe compare the drivers between the pc and laptop and see if there's any difference.

  12. Thank you for your answer. I think you are right. It will be a driver issue. Unfortunately the Driver under Windows 7, 8 and 10 is the same.

I tried Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics.

    - The drive is shown under the "Physical Drive" Pane. It passed the SMART test. Serial Number and capacity has been identified

    - The drive is also shown under "Logical Drive" Pane, BUT the columns "file System", "total space" and "free space" are empty

Cannot read USB Drive "The Parameter is Incorrect"

Hmm maybe try an older driver? When I manually installed the driver for my controller the zip file contained drivers for XP, Vista, & 7. Looking at the driver version in device manager and in the .ini files contained in the zip file with notepad it installed the Vista driver version. Unfortunately I had already backed up my array, deleted it and recreated it several times before I got W10 to see the uninitialized unallocated logical drive correctly so I'll never know if it would have seen the RAW file format correctly with the Vista drivers.

  14. Thank you for your message. Unfortunately I even do not find another driver than the "WD Ext HDD 1021 USB Device". Nothing helpful to download at Western Digital. I am being at a loss with this problem.

  15. Me again,

    1. I tried to extract the Drivers for the "WD Ext HDD 1021 Device" from my Windows XP Laptop whick is recognizing the volume with TweakBit Driver Updater and restore the driver to my Windows 10 maschine. That did not resolve my problem.

    2. Going back to Windows 8.1 was not possible. Although there is "windows.old"-data the recovery mode says that the needed data is missing.

    3. I reinstalled Windows 10 from DVD (I did my first upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 with the "normal" upgrade-process without DVD). Firstly the PC prompted that I would need to initialize the Volume and asked if I would like to initialize as MBR or GBT. The Volume was black in Volume management. I did not initialize the Volume because google said this would delete my data. After a reboot and the usage of another USB Port I get the error from the parameter (shown as "RAW", parameter incorrect).

The Volume is still recognized by my Windows XP laptop.

    Anyone ideas?
