  1. Cannot save 'hosts' file as it says I do not have permission but I'm an administrator

I have followed the directions in this thread to change permissions for the 'etc' folder and the 'hosts' file:https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-11-you-dont-have-permission-to-save-in/ddf7d6c8-d4f9-4e49-92cb-7b3c9ea90a26Yet it still will not allow me to update the 'hosts' file. I checked and I do have 'Full Control' of the 'etc' folder.I do have 'Full Control' of the 'hosts' file.I'm in a time critical situation as I need to test a new hosting server before going live. Can anyone tell me how I can save/update the 'hosts' file?

    :)

    Modify & save hosts file

I have 2 machines: Win10 & WinXP. For some reason, my hosts file on my Win10 machine listed Windows 10 Help Forums as 127.0.0.1. I don't know how this happened & I have not been able to delete that entry & save the hosts file in Windows/Drivers/etc.

How can I give myself (the administrator) permission to access the file & to save it in the etc. folder?
Is there a utility that will give me control over the hosts file?

    Thank you in advance!

  3. File Hosts permissions

The problem is not the hosts file but its location. Even Admins do not by default have the ability to save an edited hosts file there and in fact you should be getting a message "you do not have permission to save here, would you like to save it elsewhere"

    no administrator permission

    Hi Ryan,

Let us assist you to have an Administrator permission. To start, follow the steps below to enable the Windows Super Administrator Account.

    • Type CMD on the search box.
    • CMD will appear at top.
    • Right click on it, then choose Run as administrator.
    • Type this command & hit Enter: Net user administrator /active:yes.
    • After you enable the Super Administrator account, log out on your existing account then log into Super Administrator account.
    • On the Super Administrator account, you can now create an Administrator account or give Administrator permission on the existing account.

After you created an Administrator account, we suggest that you disable the Super Administrator account by following the same steps and using this command:
    Net user administrator /active:no.

Let us know how it goes.
