Windows 10: Cannot set any drive other than C: for default install location in the Xbox app for Windows

I recently added a new boot drive to my computer and did a clean install of Windows 11. However, ever since, the Xbox app no longer allows me to change the install location for games. I can select the drive on the dropdown list, but it instantly reverts back to C and games will only install there. On the old drive and past two computers, that was never a problem - pick the default drive and you're good to go. After several months working with both the Xbox and Windows support teams, we found no solution. They suggested I reformat and try again, but I'm hoping someone in the community migh

C windows installer folder - Delete?

He can do symbolic link redirection and move the files in it to a different location. *Wink
Better try it out in a virtual of first. Just a suggestion.

Like:
First move everything in c:\windows\installer to d:\installercache
Then delete c:\windows\installer folder
Then type this in command mode as admin
mklink /d c:\windows\installer d:\installercache

Removing those installer files is a bad idea. it might prevent you from updating or uninstalling apps.

 

Set Default Hard Drive

There are Apps that will move installed programs and change the registry pointers for that program too.

You can also change the default download location in windows. I found that not all programs like to download on D: drive

My personal choice is the set download location during install process.

And if worse comes to worse you can always use a symbolic command like the mklink command.

 

Error 0x80070003 Couldnt set default save location, xbox game pass

hi, Im trying to install xbox (beta) game apps to the d:\ (game installs) yet it wont let me unless its the default app directory.

i also cant change the default app directory from c:\ to d:\ idk why. attached in the error message 0x80070003.

I read here that 0x80070005 is denied access so i tried the icacl solution in command prompt, but it didnt help. any ideas?

I fixed it, by removing all my "d:\game_installs" and Steam_directory off the drive, formatting the drive, and then changing location of windows 10 default apps. it took about 2 hrs to move everything :S theres gotta be an easier way to manipulate microsoft apps and folders than formatting a drive?
