Windows 10: Cannot share a folder

I spent hours fighting with Windows 10 trying to share a folder for Everyone (i.e. guests, no account, no password) to use. I have set all permissions to Allow, have disabled require password for shares but the damn thing still requires a log in from other computers.

What is the simplest, fool-proof way of creating a public shared folder on Windows 10?

EDIT:

I tried to access it from another Win10 and it worked. Ubuntu, however, fails consistently. The original Win10 has a local account without a password and an automatic log-in if it matters. Also it doesn't see Ubuntu's samba shares like the second (working Win10) does.

When you share files or folders, they are not as protected as they are when you do not share them. If your computer is not joined to a domain, you can use the Network Setup Wizard to automatically turn file and printer sharing on or off. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Setup Wizard.
If you both use the same computer

You can put the files you want to share in the Shared Documents folder. Files stored in the Shared Documents folder or its subfolders are always available to other users on your computer.

Sharing a folder

I appreciate your time and patience to work on this issue.

To know the username of your computer, please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Type Command prompt in the search bar.
   
2. Right click on the Command prompt icon and select Run as Administrator.
   
3. Type whoami in Command Prompt window and press Enter.
   
4. You will find the username of the computer, use the username and your password to access the file from the shared folder.
   

However, if the above steps didn’t help, I suggest you to turn off password protected sharing and check if that helps.

To turn off password protected sharing, please follow the steps mentioned below on your laptop:

1. Press and hold Windows + R key on the keyboard.
   
2. Type Control and click on
   OK.
   
3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
   
4. Click on Change advance sharing settings.
   
5. Under All Networks, click on
   Turn off password protected sharing.

Sharing folders over network - access denied
