Windows 10: Cannot sign in to Windows 10 machine if another user already signed in

I have two accounts working with the same laptop and, if someone hasn't signed out, the other user is unable to sign in. The message states something like "Someone else is signed in to this machine, they must sign out before you can sign in".


There is also no option swap between users.

I want Windows 10 Sign-in Screen to show which users are signed in

Thank you for trying to help, but as stated in my post, "If you are already signed into an account, then you can look and see which users (if any) are signed in and there is no guesswork needed." This can be done as you described or (I think) through the Users tab in Task Manager.

The problem is knowing which users are signed in when you are at the Sign-in Screen. Windows 8.x used to say below a user's picture and name "Signed in". Windows 10 does not. If a signed in user Locks their account or if the PC is put/goes to Sleep or Hibernation and then you come along and want to restart or shutdown from the Sign-in Screen. In that case, Windows 10 tells you other users are signed in, but you have no way of knowing which users are signed in without first signing into one of the accounts.

 

How to sign in to Windows 10 as different User

There are several ways that you can do to switch between your 2 accounts, such as going through
Start menu, through Ctrl +
Alt + Delete screen, through Sign-in
screen or through Task Manager. For us to isolate the issue, we would like to ask the following questions:

• Are you connected to a domain or managed by Windows Server?
• Have you made any recent changes to your system settings prior to this issue?
• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you follow these steps to switch user account:

• Click/tap on your desktop to make it the current focused (active) window, and press
  Alt + F4 keys to open Shut Down Windows window.
• Click on the drop down menu and select Switch user.
• You will now be taken to the lock screen to unlock.
• It will show you the sign-in screen to select and sign in to the account you want to switch to.

To address this concern, we suggest that you follow these steps on how to change your Sign-in option in Windows 10 PC:

• Click Start, and then type netplwiz.
• The command will appear as a search result in the Start menu search. Hit
  Enter on the result to open it.
• User Accounts will appear. Select your user account and uncheck "User must enter a username and password to use this computer."
• Enter your user account's password then click OK.

Note: If you are using a Microsoft account to sign in, you need to enter the full email address in the username box.
