Windows 10: Cannot sign into microsoft store using my security key

I have set up 2 factor authentication for all my microsoft accounts. I have two account on my laptop, one my windows 10 account is tied to and another for office 365 / onedrive. These are personal / home accounts.


So I can login to my microsoft account in my edge browser using my FIDO2 security key.


However, when I try to Get an app in Microsoft store it insists on asking for my password, or failing that an authenticator code. Even if I'm already signed into my account.


For better security use my security key FIDO2 / passwordless login with a PIN but Microsoft Store fails to ask for that. Just in case, I ensured my default browser was set to Microsoft Edge.


Using a password is no good for 2 reasons: 1 I have a very strong password I can't remember, 2 I don't want to type it in or have a password manager type it in except in emergency to avoid the risk of keyloggers or MITM attacks. Microsoft Authenticator is no good, because that requires using an android phone, which is inherently insecure. If someone snatched by phone, it wouldn't be difficult to access Microsoft Authenticator and my emails and therefore access my microsoft account.


So, why is Microsoft failng to use the 2nd factor security key I have set up when Edge uses it successfully and how can I access the store without compromising my security?


I could use my security key to generate TOTP codes for Microsoft Store; but I'd prefer not to add extra authentication methods increasing the attack surface against my microsoft account.


Can anyone advise? There doesn't seem to be any option to contact Microsoft for issues such as this, except for perhaps paid Windows support. I'm not happy to pay to get support for a problem that Microsoft has caused my not properly implementing security key support.

What happens when you try to sign to Windows Store?

Please give us the complete error message if any.

For Windows store issue you may refer the following suggestion:

I would suggest you to refer to the following steps:

• 
  Press Windows +R Keys to open Run command
  
• 
  Type wsreset.exe and hit enter
  

Now, try to open store and see if that helps.

• Press Windows key + R key to open Run.
• Type wsreset.exe and press
  Enter.
• Restart the PC, sign in with your Microsoft user account and check if you are able to find Windows Store.

• Type wsreset.exe and press Enter
