Windows 10: Cannot Take ownership of FAT32 USB drive, "You have been denied permission to access this...

I have tried running " diskmgmt.msc takeown /f E:\ /R /D Y ", I get the response "File ownership cannot be applied on insecure file systems".Every resource seems to say "Open properties, go to the security tab", but there is no security tab.I am, and have always been, the only administrator account on this computer, and for this drive, it has never even been used in another computer!I have tried changing the drive letter.Even though I very much do not want to lose the data, I have even tried to cut my losses and format the drive, but apparently "I do not have sucficient rights to perform this

I am having exactly the same issue.

It applied to USB drives formatted as FAT32.

I can list folders, but cannot open files. icalc command returns "access denied".

This started happening after I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Are you recommending me to downgrade to Windows 7? I really hope not.

There is no "Security" tab in the drive properties because it is NOT an NTFS drive.

It is not possible to take ownership of these drives.

I tried logging in with the hidden administrator account -- same issue.

Disabling "Removable Disks: Deny read access" in group policy editor (gpedit.msc) did not help.

Disk management app states the drive is "Healthy (Primary Partition).

Please provide a solution that works.

This was working until a fix came slightly before Christmas. I believe I interrupted a USB driver autoinstallation and ever since I can go to my FAT32 USB drive (and any USB drive), I can browse the folders but any attempt to read a file brings back "Access
Denied". The USB drive works fine in another PC and the same can be said for all mz USB drives. Of course, I could move everything to NTFS, but this does not work for the CF card reader that connects to my USB and appears as a drive that is written to by my
camera. The USB hardware is clearly fine as I also have an NTFS external drive connected and in any case, as mentioned I can see the folders. CHKDSK runs fine. Note that as this is a FAT32 drive, takeown and ACLs do not apply, the drive is not shared and there
is no security tab (FAT32 not NTFS).

What I have tried:

• Safe mode
• Use of admin cmd window
• Removal of drive/driver using Device Manager, reboot and autoinstall
• Use of other tools like driveclean, reboot and autoinstall
• chkdsk (fine)

Any suggestions?

 

Folder access denied and Take Ownership fails

I have been dealing with an issue lately not being able to access the files from an external drive. That drive contains the windows 10 files that I had on my old pc. I have tried many methods of trying to take folder ownership and it keeps failing, error
messages include: "You have been denied permission to access this folder, to gain access...security tab" which I have tried multiple of times and still no luck. I tried to change the owner to admin, my user, everyone still nothing, all I get is "Error Applying
Security...Failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access denied". I have also tried using a third-party software "Take Ownership" even that failed.

Besides that I tried to perform cmd commands in admin such as check the disk and the response I get is "CHKSDK is not available for RAW drivers". I even tried:

• takeown /f S:\path/r /d y
• icacls S:\path /grant administrators: f /t

The response from the above command is: "Error: The request has failed due to a fatal device hardware error".

Not sure what else to do. I would appreciate if someone can suggest a possible solution. I got some important files stored there and I really dont wanna lose them.
