Windows 10: cannot update Windows 10 due to low memory

I have a small laptop (dell with 32GB HD) that i used mostly for movies and file viewing while away on business travel without connectivity. I have been blowing off updates (i think i am on original version), but recently decided to try to update to use the computer for more. I keep getting the message stating i need to make more room for the update or attach an external drive. I need 10GB and I only have 6GB of apps and programs and several MB of files, but the restricted part of my HD is too large to clean sufficient space.


I connected a 16GB thumb drive and even though it has sufficient space I get the message that i need to free up almost 5GB of space on the C: drive.


what can i do to force the update?


Can I download the update to external storage without going through the update app in Windows (is there a download somewhere online?)?

New Laptop constantly low on memory.

This issue may arise due to:

Corruptions in Windows components, Ram not accessing its full capacity, multiple files opened on the computer etc.

As an initial troubleshooting step, I suggest you to run
System Maintenance troubleshooter finds and clean up

unused files and shortcuts and performs maintenance tasks.

• • Press Windows key and type Troubleshooting.
  • Select Troubleshooting and hit Enter.
  • Click on View all in the left pane of the window.
  • Select System Maintenance.

Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

If the issue still persists, I suggest you to check if the computer is using its full memory.

• Press Windows key + R and type msconfig.
• Go to Advance options and check if you have choosen use Maximum memory.
• If not, I suggest you to place a check mark, restart the computer and check if that helps.
