  1. Cannot update windows, succeeded too well in disabling it

    Hi everyone.
A year and a half or so back I got so fed up with windows update I absolutely banished it from my system, and I think I've succeeded too well because now I cannot for the life of me get windows to update.
(The Windows update page in the control panel won't even load)
It's definitely my fault, I forgot to document in what manner I disabled it.
I've checked the basic ways to disable it, but I think I must've disabled Windows update in another manner, because changing those settings back did nothing. By the basic ways I mean:

    • Check the status of the Windows update service in Services.msc (It used to be so that I couldn't change the setting to automatic or manual, but I managed to do so in the registry editor, however, it didn't seem to help)
    • "Start"- key in \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
    • "NoAutoUpdate"-key in \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    • and finally I've checked the Group Policy editor - Windows components - Windows update - Configure automatic updates

But alas, former me has become current me's enemy as I cannot for the life of me enable the windows update again.
If anyone can think of some way they did (or know how to) disable their Windows update in another manner, I might be able to use those methods "backwards" to revert it to a state where an update is possible.

I'd very much appreciate any help, I feel rather dumb because I put myself into this situation.

    OS Version: 10.0.18362 N/A Build 18362

P.S. This is my first thread in this forum. Please let me know if anything is out of the ordinary and needs to be changed. Thanks again.

    :)

  2. Upgrading to creators update stops at 30% and reverts

    Steps to take:

    1. In device manager disable nVidia display adapter if you have also Intel graphics there
    2. Do a FULL disk Cleanup on C drive
    3. In Task Manager disable ALL Startup items
    4. In C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads delete ALL Files and folders
    5. In System Configuration disable ALL NON MS services
    6. Reboot
    7. In Windows defender manually update virus definitions
    8. In Windows defender and all other AV apps, disable ALL AV capabilities
    9. Try to Update again
    10. If update succeeded, then enable AV, startup items, NVidia display adapter(should be online already) and non Windows Services you disabled.

If you need screenshots or help with any of the steps and where to find the right tool for the right job, then drop us a line. Cannot update windows, succeeded too well in disabling it :)

  3. Windows 8 failure configuring updates and reverting

I agree 8 is awful! It's not for me though... I replaced a broken screen in a Win 8 laptop that was given to me and I am going to give it for free to someone that can't afford one so they can do homework at home. Yes I took it from 8 to 8.1 back on 10/09/2014. This is what I posted there...

"Great post! I found a similar one. I would like to point out that you may want to edit your OP...

    1. Step 1 should read to disable AUTOMATIC updates, not disable manual updates.

    2. KB2871398 should really read KB2871389

I would like to say that KB2917499 may also be needed as it was in my case. I also had to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter after installing those 2 updates. After these steps I was able to begin my 8.1 download from the Microsoft store. I don't know if it made a difference or not, but I also went into the Bios and disabled "Secure Boot."

It was a helpful post. Thanks!
